Air Force launches Minuteman III test from Vandenberg coast
An unarmed Minuteman III ICBM was launched at 12:03 a.m. from Vandenberg Air Force Base to Kwajalein Atoll, a test designed to verify accuracy and reliability of the U S nuclear deterrent. Led by the 90th, 341st and 625th units, the mission used an airborne launch control system and a nonexplosive payload to record flight data. Col Chris Moss called it an important demonstration amid ongoing North Korea tensions with Nuclear Age Peace Foundation voicing criticism of timing and policy implications.
