In Columbus antitax forces hailed the defeat by 15 to 80 of a bill allowing local subdivisions to vote new levies outside the 10 mill limit by a simple majority. Senate supports were awaited as majority and minority reports surfaced with the 1937 1938 appropriations.
Ohio Bell case returns to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission for rehearing after the U S Supreme Court set aside a ruling ordering the company to refund 18 million dollars to subscribers in 45 cities. The case is remanded to the state supreme court which had upheld the commission. The federal court found the company was denied a fair trial.
Cincinnati resident Henry Fox marks his 100th birthday and predicts prohibition will return soon if women are not kept out of the Saigons.
Mrs Laura Moore 28 attempted suicide in Denver after a quarrel with her husband. She fired two shots into the ceiling while her husband returned fire into a coal bucket. Police blamed domestic troubles for the episode and noted her gun test beside the failed self attempt.
At the twenty fifth annual meeting the U S Chamber of Commerce opens a round table on Wagner Act amendments with James W Hook of Geometric Tool Co set to present. The chamber seeks a formal proposal to change the law aiding management while preserving labor rights in contracts.
A bill to raise school superintendent standards passed the House 96 to 3 and moves to the Senate for minor amendment and governor reference. Introduced by Sen. H. D. Byrne it would require after Aug 1 1938 a superintendent must hold a superintendent type certificate and grant him power to appoint principals supervisors and teachers. It also allows boards by three fourths vote to re employ teachers over the superintendent’s objections with a five year term from Aug 1 to July 31.
Roy Taylor of Mineral was moved Monday to Sheltering Arms Hospital from Cherrington Hospital Logan after an auto accident Friday night. He suffers a slight concussion and a fractured leg. Paul Kail of The Plains had a minor operation at Sheltering Arms, and Samuel J. Barnhill of Guysville had a major operation Monday night. Robert Jackson of New Marshfield was discharged Tuesday.
Gallipolis reports rising Ohio River at headwaters with spring freshet expected to reach about 37 feet. Rivermen forecast minimal disruption, though Eureka Dam coffers may flood and delay operations for up to a week.

Clarence Butts of Nelsonville aged 53 and long time mining industry figure in Hocking Valley died at his Fort Street home Monday night from complications of a mine injury four years earlier. He served as mine superintendent, ran his own property, and co owned the Miller and Butts grocery for 12 years. He leaves a wife Miriam Bridgewater, three children L E Butts Margaret Butts and Robert, three sisters and one brother. funeral Thursday at 2 pm with Rev H A Rothrock officiating.
The Rev. William F. McDowell 79 retired Methodist Episcopal bishop died of a heart attack in Washington Monday. Elected in 1904 he served 12 years in the Chicago Area before moving to Washington as bishop of the Baltimore Area. He retired nine years ago. Born in Millersburg Ohio he will be buried in Delaware Ohio with services held here Wednesday.
Governor Davey announced a state observance naming the week of May 28 Music Week in Ohio and urged the public to participate in musical events and activities statewide.
Gallipolis report says two and a half year old Johnny Ecker survived a high speed fall when the rear car door flew open on Lower River Road near Swan Creek. He was checked by Dr. C A Vornholt and found to have bruised hands and knees with scratches but no serious injuries.

Mrs Wallis Simpson is free to apply for the final decree of divorce from Ernest Simpson, enabling marriage to the Duke of Windsor who relinquished the throne. The six month interval has expired, decree nisi issued October 27, and the final decree expected next Monday. It is anticipated the couple will wed in France near Chateau De Candé around May 24, after the coronation of George VI.
