Old Age Pensions Pushed by County Hospital Plan

A three woman committee urges transforming the Athens County Infirmary into a combined hospital and county home for the aged to access state old age pensions. They estimate 29 inmates are pension-eligible and a $870 monthly pension could fund care and operations, with a $1,000–$1,500 remodeling cost offset by subscriptions. County Commissioner Ira Whitmore backs the plan, noting initial funds are the hurdle and suggesting a nurse oversee patients amid proposed facility shifts.
