Ohio Senate Democrats push through a broad unemployment benefits bill amid GOP silence. The measure hikes weekly benefits from 33 to 47 dollars and extends the maximum period from 26 to 30 weeks, with amendments reducing income deductions and expanding who qualifies for benefits.
Washington officials fear Iraq may become a Soviet satellite as Premier Kassem deepens ties with Communist support since the July revolution. George N. Dale told the American Newspaper Publishers Assn that strikes against newspapers last year rose to near wartime highs. He warned that if the first quarter rate of 1959 continues, the year could reach the century’s worst. The ANPA session noted 38 strikes against 62 dailies. Defense secretary McElroy was set to speak at the convention dinner.
Plans to relocate two miles of Ohio 146 and one mile of Ohio 156 in Muskingum County will be explained at a public hearing at 2 p.m. April 27 in the Falls Two School at Dillon Falls. The State Highway Department estimates the cost at about $230000 to straighten Ohio 146 and remove several curves on Ohio 156.

Richard E. Fisher, 29, of Bolivar New York, died when a bulldozer he operated on a gas pipeline project near Empire, Ohio, went out of control Wednesday. The accident occurred about 12 miles north of Steubenville.

A 16 day strike involving about 600 construction workers in the Canton Massillon area ends after a two year contract agreement raising pay by 35 cents an hour.

Congressman Robert W Levering says arrangements are being made to transport the corps to Williams home in Franklin Texas and to record the tune for him. This marks the 100th anniversary of the song by Daniel Decatur Emmett of Mount Vernon Ohio.
