Anti Alcohol Rule Splits Churchmen
New York report on a Methodist United Church merger debating whether to keep a strict abstinence rule or adopt a voluntary approach to drinking and smoking. Leaders differ on pastoral effectiveness, with studies noting high rates of drinking among Protestants and calls for a balanced policy amid the 11 million union. The change would allow some flexibility while urging restraint and mutual respect among drinkers and abstainers.
