In Oakland California Bobby Seale defeats incumbent John Reading by 84 votes in a runoff. Reading led a nine candidate race but fell short of a majority with 55 342 to 21 314 for Seale in unofficial results. Reading faces a May 15 runoff after failing to clear 60 percent.
