Ohio Bandit Outsmarted And Slain

An ex conductor paroled from Missouri State Penitentiary was shot to death during a holdup at a St Louis cocktail lounge after a stealthy encounter with two plainclothes detectives. His accomplice and a customer were critically wounded as 13 shots rang out in a chaotic Saturday night clash. Police identified the victim as Frank Bird, year old, who had been jailed for murder during a prior escape attempt. The partner was Robert Lee Orr, 32, of St. Louis, wounded in the neck. Detectives Valenti and McKenzie confronted the masked bandits as they entered the lounge. Valenti described a tense search during which Bird attempted to search him, prompting a swift exchange of gunfire. The incident occurred before about 25 patrons.
