L. W. Russell aged 73 or 74 died suddenly last Friday from heart failure. A resident of Millfield and Athens most of his life, he ran a retail furniture business and left a substantial estate. Funeral was held at Trimble on Sunday afternoon. The notice criticizes a sensational article in Columbus Sunday Herald and defends Dr. Dunlap and Capt. J. C. Bower as loyal and courteous officials.
Mr and Mrs Leland Powers will close the Athens Lecture Course at city hall on Thursday evening April 23. Powers is a renowned impersonator and his wife a favored soprano whose voice is described as sweetness itself. The piece promises a unique and delightful entertainment urging a full house. The note also reports a law change allowing $10 000 yearly road funds, up from $5 000, with a suggestion of higher annual spending to improve county thoroughfares within ten years.
A social and entertainment program is planned at the M E Church this Thursday evening. Menu cards will let attendees order items they want and pay only for their selections. After supper, declamations solos duets and the Humanophone will be featured. All cordially invited.

The funeral sermon for the late Isaac Deshler who died in California will be preached by Rev. R C Harper at Plains M E church on Sunday morning May 34d at 10 30 o clock.
The home of Capt. and Mrs. J. B. Allen hosted a refined anniversary reception with 150 guests on a Monday evening. Gifts from friends included a large Japanese vase, a Royal Worcester dessert set, and numerous decorative items, reflecting high regard for the couple. Additional notices praised Leland Powers as a versatile performer with acclaim from multiple publications.
The City Hall performances last Thursday and Friday drew large audiences. Eva Norris, Ed Norris, and Robt. Kane earned praise for singing and acting, with special mention for Wirt Leland and Schrantz. A repeat show Friday April 17 offered reduced prices and a royal welcome for Mr Kane.
Mr F. Stedman departed for Mt. Clemens Michigan a noted northern health resort on Wednesday and will be absent several weeks.

The 16th District of Ohio Sunday School Convention will be held at McConnellville on May 5 and 6. Marion Laurance of Toledo, General Secretary of the State Association, is to attend along with prominent SS men from the district. The invitation extends to 5.8 workers from other counties to join. J. K. Van Bibber, an experienced Tampa mechanic, crafted a wife’s work stand resembling an urn. Using about a hundred pieces from thirty wood varieties, including elder, sumac, Spanish mahogany, persimmon, and walnut, the mosaic design showcases careful joinery and variety.
Brooklyn clergyman Dr Theodore L Cuyler writes of Dr Mary A Allen that her lecture at Lafayette Avenue church drew about twelve hundred listeners. He says the audience was interested pleased and profited by a lecture excellent in sentiment and delivery and wishes she could be heard in every congregation and community.

Opening of the National League Championship season set for April 22 in Cincinnati with the local club facing the Cleveland team. An associated low rate excursion to Cincinnati via the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railroad runs the same date with return by April 24. Association and League games also scheduled in Cincinnati on April 24 and 28. Excursion tickets remain valid for return until April 24.
On April 22 the C H V T R will sell excursion tickets to Cincinnati via Lancaster for the Republican League meeting at 2.50 dollars for round trip. Tickets are good returning until April 24 inclusive. W.58 Buackwoop agent.
