In a Kremlin speech Khrushchev said Chinese Communists have created serious difficulties for world communism and placed it on the verge of a split. He urged a German question settlement on the old Soviet basis and warned China pursues a revolutionary path that could lead to war.
Senator Barry Goldwater captures the Illinois presidential preference primary with 63 percent. Senator Margaret Chase Smith trails with 26 percent, while Henry Cabot Lodge gets 6 percent and Richard M. Nixon 3 percent. Charles H. Percy, 29, wins the Republican gubernatorial nomination at 44. Smith and Goldwater both campaigned in Illinois, with Smith's strong showing a surprise after New Hampshire.
Former vice president Richard Nixon arrived at New York’s Kennedy Airport after a 314 week business trip to Asian and European nations. He urged a harder stance against Communist aggression in Asia and criticized Sen. Fulbright for proposing a more flexible softer line.
In Vandalia a 23 year old PDQ Super market manager, James Rosenfeld, killed himself after a deadly gun game with two teenage workers. The slain man was the store owner’s son. the two teens survived the perilous afternoon incident.
A planning meeting at Baker Center outlined making Ohio University the emergency seat of government for the state in wartime or threat. Officials noted fallout protection is now the main concern with OU buildings approved as shelters. Attendees included Brig. Gen. Minton, James Worster, Gov. Rhodes aides, city and university leaders, Red Cross, and state Civil Defense officials.
Dr. Novice G. Fawcett, president of Ohio State University, will deliver the commencement address at Rio Grande College on May 1. With 33 years in education and since 1956 as OSU president, he previously led Columbus Public Schools.
Byron De La Beckwith faces further questions as his second trial nears its end in Jackson Mississippi. Prosecutors allege he shot Medgar Evers on June 12 last year, completing a case after a hung jury in the first trial. Beckwith disputes riding with two Jackson cab drivers and denies being in the city on June 8.
