French Settlers at Gallipolis in 1790 and the Scioto Company
The Scioto Company and Paris investors promoted French settlement at Gallipolis starting in 1790. Promoters described rich land with timber and game, but titles were imperfect and the venture failed after about 500 settlers arrived. Many left for other towns, receivers of Congress aid, and the area faced famine, illness, and shifting ownership as Gallipolis transformed through 1807 and later.
