Congress moved toward a quick compromise on a $200 million gap between House and Senate foreign aid bills. Committees from both chambers worked to settle differences, while Ohio votes shown the partisan support for continuing the European Recovery Program with a large 15 month extension.
Springfield reports the St Anthony s Hospital fire in Effingham on April 5 killed or missing 75 persons. The state fire marshal cites cellulose wall material old and fresh paint and unprotected openings as factors in the rapid spread. A memorial near the hospital ruins honored the dead.
The Home Grown Sage For Sale sign marks a long running local business selling dried sage in Athens and Nelsonville drugstores. Traces of the old Beaumont depot remind of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal trade linked to salt works and coal mines. A summer drive around the Great Bend via Routes 124 and 338 offers a scenic historic tour near Ravenswood and the Ohio River where George Washington crossed in 1774.

Fire in a Cincinnati home killed Raymond Rude, 35, and his two young sons Billy 5 and Tommy 4. The blaze started when Rude poured gasoline into a coal heating stove. Thelma Rude 27 and three other children suffered minor burns.
An explosion at Clark Field airbase in the Philippine Islands killed one Filipino worker and injured more than twenty others. The blast from 100 tons of stored bombs damaged a cement pipe plant and ignited a grass fire that threatened the nearby 20th Station Hospital.
Washington AP bulk of criticism from Air Secretary Symington and Army Secretary Royall on the unification law as inadequate and expensive. They urged stronger civilian control and a permanent Joint Chiefs chair as top military adviser to the president and defense secretary.
Chief Justice Carl V. Weygandt prepared to rule on whether Common Pleas Judge James C. Connell showed prejudice in a Cleveland labor case involving Local 735 CIO United Electrical Workers. The union seeks a contempt trial change and claims prejudice amid a CIO strike against Fawick Airflex Co. In a related move, six more people were ordered arrested on contempt charges by Judge Connell, including five automobile owners near his home after a dispersal incident and a sixth individual who allegedly sent a threatening letter.
Four people killed and 32 injured as windstorms ripped through Georgia. Tornadic winds smashed property in Manchester Zebulon and Griffin in West Central Georgia. A small tornado struck a rural Walker County area in extreme Northwest Georgia.
Garrett A. Collins 53 died from a fractured skull after reportedly falling into a 60 foot shaft at the Whitmore mine near Coonville. No foul play suspected and his watch stopped at 11 17. Survived by wife Ethel, a son in the army, two daughters, three brothers, a sister, and other relatives. Funeral arrangements pending Hoodlett funeral home.
Two masked gunmen held up a diamond importer and his salesman in suburban Oak Park on Tuesday, stealing three sample cases of jewelry valued at $50,000.
The body of John Logue, 72, who drowned March 30 in the Ohio River near Hocking port, was recovered Tuesday near Indian Run about a mile south of the Meigs Athens county line. It was sighted by Frank McDonald and recovered with help from Ray E Adams Ashley Adams and Clyde Adams. Deputy Coroner Fritz Buck and Sheriff George Bateman said Logue apparently walked into the river that morning. the body was taken to Spencer funeral home Belpre.
John Thomas Barnett nineteen year old farm tenant, a Mansfield Reformatory parolee, was indicted for first degree murder in the killing of his sister Mary Velma Campbell age twenty one. Prosecutor Leon McCarty quoted Barnett saying he killed her after she threatened to tell authorities he planned to violate parole. Campbell formerly lived in Mineral, Athens County.
Cleveland report says Tillie Maschmeier fifty four year old widow admitted strangling four year old Bobby Shaw. She faces first degree murder charges. Maschmeier attempted self harm and warned jailers to keep her jailed or she would kill again.
In Springfield a West Point soldier asks a landlord for a home. He says his kids are in the cemetery, his wife sheds a tear, and they secure the apartment by paying six months in advance. They return with their three children to move in. The landlord objects but is waved off by the rent receipt.
A 32 year old Catlettsburg driver William Palfrey was charged with manslaughter after a gas pipeline truck left Route 5 near Rocksprings causing the suffocation deaths of Pvt David Hendricks 18 Middleport and Kenneth Grover 17 Syracuse. Robert Salser 18 Racine suffered leg burns and rests. Funeral services for Grover and Hendricks planned Thursday with military rites by veterans groups.
Beverly Hills police label the five year old boy kidnapping as a hoax by father Joe Goodman Sr who is jailed on grand theft suspicions. His wife plans to take their son and daughter to Georgia and not seek divorce. She says the boy was taken by bogus military academy reps and a ransom demand followed. She withdrew $33,000 from a safety box and handed it to a man. The father is also linked to a $400 wristwatch robbery.
Washington says 159 plants will be removed or partially removed from the reparations list. Some sites lose only a single piece of equipment while five steel plants will boost Western Germany's crude steel capacity by 165,000 tons annually to reach about 13,465,000 tons, with an 11,100,000 ton production ceiling remaining.
In Thornville a tractor pulling a cultivator ran over and killed James Paul Packer five. His father Paul Packer was driving the tractor toward a barn and believed his son was inside.
Milwaukee, Wis. prosecutor delays Babich murder hearing after 19 year old youth is asked to discuss a story told by Patricia Birmingham to a schoolmate Carol Leszynaki. Patricia 16 was shot and her body dumped in the Milwaukee River on Feb 10, five weeks before Babich eloped with Patricia's sister Kathleen. Police say Patricia told Carol Milton Babich threatened her and tried to assault her. Carol was found in Kenosha and brought to Milwaukee for care.
Marietta based International Derrick and Equipment Co will dismantle its plant on April 15 and will not transfer its 150 employees, according to President O M Havekette. The firm’s sales of off shore well equipment have declined. The plant was built in 1919 for Dressers Industries subsidiary of Cleveland.

The Ohio House approved a bill to allow Christian Science healers to charge for their services by a 75 to 50 vote, sending the measure to the Senate for a test. It would affect about 300,000 practitioners, with strong cross party support and a companion measure on Sunday bowling also advancing.
Doctors reported Harry Z Dodds Jr is legally sane and capable of intelligent conversation during a 30 day stay at Lima State Hospital. The findings support proceeding with trial for the murder of Mins Gifford with Dodds to be returned to Athens. Grover Rawlins also faces first degree murder charges and a Columbus bartender known as Jimmy Stewart remains missing.
