Washington ap reports a draft deferment bill by Rep Iiday Texas would delay induction of fathers until childless men in the same state are called. The measure ranks call order by single men with no dependents single men with collateral dependents married men with no children and married men with children. It was to start the leadersh ip week before a two week recess.
Allied troops under Gen. Sir Bernard Montgomery capture Sousse, 70 miles south of Tunis, and force Rommel’s Axis troops from Kairouan as they press toward a final Tunisian campaign stand. Evacuating forces destroy supplies, leaving wreckage along routes amid a rapid 125 mile coastal push.
Washington The House Ways and Means Committee voted down 16 to 9 today a move by nine Republican members to reopen consideration of pay-as-you-go tax legislation. The move followed efforts to obtain another vote on the Rumi Plan which would skip an income tax year and shift 44,000,000 taxpayers to a current payment basis. The draft clause would block drafting by occupation. Treasury Secretary Morgenthau predicted the campaign would push the national debt beyond the legal limit.
An AP report from New York states the Western Atlantic submarine war has killed at least 5 100 sailors and possibly over 8 000. Since Pearl Harbor 644 Allied and neutral ships were sunk. Last week three U S cargo ships were destroyed adding 73 to the casualty tally. Seventy two seamen are listed dead and 720 missing, most presumed lost.
The War Production Board charged the Specialty Mattress Co. of Huntington WV and 13 subsidiaries in Ohio Michigan Pennsylvania Indiana West Virginia and New York with violating a WPB order restricting mattress and bed spring production. Between Sept 1 and Oct 5 1942 the group allegedly produced 115 mattresses during the official prohibition. A separate item reports a tornado in Hackleburg Alabama killing two.
Ohio launches second war loan drive with a state goal near 50 million dollars as parades and volunteer workers mobilize in Columbus Cleveland Toledo Akron and other cities. More than 3 000 marched in Columbus led by Gold Star Mothers and guardsmen from several towns. Prisoners pledged 6769 dollars in bonds and about 10 000 in pledges were expected. Cleveland held a downtown parade as the drive opened with Army Navy pennants and war plant banners.
Washington reports the Office of Price Administration authorized its regional office to set maximum prices for food and beverages in restaurants cafeterias hotels and other eating establishments. The base period is April 4 10 with local boards handling complaints hearings and price list reviews under district OPA offices.

Thousands of men who became dads between summer 1941 and last Sept 15 were granted draft deferment as fathers for the first time under a new Selective Service regulation. Local boards must classify as fathers all with children born before Sept 15, and these fathers remain deferred until further orders. The rule eliminating the nine month old 3-B and shifting many farm deferments to 3-C reshaped the draft order, with 3-A reserved for fathers and 3-D created for cases of extreme hardship.
The Missouri River swelled toward a flood crest threatening Omaha’s industrial area. Up to 1,000 soldiers and civilians worked to shield Carter Lake Iowa and Omaha Municipal Airport. Downstream communities redoubled efforts to avert human loss, while livestock losses mounted but no fatalities reported.
East bound Big Four passenger train collided with an Indianapolis Union Railway locomotive and caboose at a west side crossing in Indianapolis today. Two crewmen were killed and a third believed dead under debris. Four others injured. No passengers on the Big Four train were hurt.

The Cleveland District Office of Defense Transportation reports a survey showing truck operators in the district failed to turn in unused gasoline ration coupons to local War Price and Rationing Boards at quarter end. This noncompliance could lead to revocation of their certificates of war necessity. The district issued 70,000 certificates to operators across Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lorain, Huron, and Erie Counties.
Washington reports a revised tally for the April 7 Guadalcanal air battle shows Japan lost 39 planes. Allied losses include a destroyer a tanker and a corvette sunk a small fuel boat damaged and seven Allied planes lost five pilots rescued. The fuel boat was previously listed sunk.

Canton workers resumed work at Timken Roller Beaving Co Gambrinus plant after a 10 day walkout, linked to previous protests following the promotion of 27 Black workers to machine jobs.

Washington 4 Daniel C. Roper, Roosevelt's first secretary of commerce, died at his home after months of illness. He was 76. A native of Marlboro County South Carolina, Roper had been largely retired since 1939 when he served briefly as minister to Canada.
Fire partially destroyed a supply building and equipment at the Lockbourne Army Air Base in Columbus. Fire fighters saved some equipment including bomber parts and towed several Flying Fortresses away from danger on a nearby runway.

Washington UPI reports the War Production Board authorized rapid completion of 32 rural electrification projects halted last July. About 2,461 miles of line will supply 6,700 farms with electricity. three Ohio projects include Buckeye Rural Electric Cooperative in Gallia County and Adams Rural Electric Cooperative in Adams County.
