Viet Cong shells hit more than 45 towns and bases in the night, targeting Tay Ninh and Vinh Long on opposite sides of Saigon. At least 21 killed and 200 wounded, with about 80 missing in Tay Ninh. No American deaths reported.
Pamela Agnew daughter of Vice President Spiro Agnew and Robert DeHaven of White Marsh Md will marry June 21 both are 25 Miss Agnew is social worker in Baltimore counties Department of Social Services. DeHaven teaches children at a private mental hospital.
Rep. Adam Clayton Powell told about 4,000 University of Alabama students he would call a national convention to press for an Edward Kennedy Julian Bond Democratic ticket in 1972. He warned a Kennedy Bond ticket missing could push for a third party remarking on regional race prejudice.
Johnny Cash and a troupe entertained 900 inmates at Cummins Prison Farm Arkansas. Prison newspaper editor Wade Eaves awarded an honorary life sentence to the star after the performance. The show was taped by American Broadcasting Co for broadcast June 7.
County Commissioners visit a local children’s home to assess possible sites for a new facility while continuing to debate location concerns. The discussion reflects ongoing efforts to expand educational and social services for area youths.
Egyptian official Mahmud Fawzi to White House with King Hussein six point plan for peace in the Middle East. Plan would allow free passage through Gulf of Aqaba and Suez Canal for Israel and others in return for Israel returning territory since the 1967 war. Hussein asserts Israel cannot have both peace and territory and cites Egyptian backing. State Department had no record of such assurances from Nasser.
Ohio lawmakers learned Gov. James A. Rhodes would seek about 2 billion dollars for education over two years. The supplementary bill proposes annual education funding increases, campus fee freezes, end of out-of-state undergraduate aid, and enrollment caps at central campuses of Bowling Green, Kent State, Miami, Ohio, and Ohio State.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy presses on with an Alaska village tour despite Republican subcommittee members quitting over perceived publicity aims. The split includes Sen. William Saxbe and Sen. Henry Bellmon, who label the trip a staged publicity stunt, while Kennedy and Sen. Mondale continue the mission to highlight native living conditions. The tour, aided by reporters, runs from Barrow to Fairbanks with mild, above normal temperatures and light precipitation forecast.
About 1,200 Harvard University students voted to strike for three days after campus police clashed with protesters at a sit-in. Some professors canceled classes as 400 helmeted officers cleared the area leaving 39 injured and 197 arrested. The vote condemned police action and violence on campus.
Wes Gallagher of the Associated Press urged objective reporting at Ohio University Journalism Week. He warned reporters face brickbats and pressure to be partisan but urged fairness and conscience, saying arrogance is journalism’s deadliest sin and that the public reacts instantly to biased coverage.
