SS Peirce Again Heads Toward Sea
The S. S. Peirce remained downriver from Cincinnati on her maiden sea trial voyage from Point Pleasant to Mobile Alabama. The 161 foot vessel ran aground on an uncharted sandbar below the Anthony Meldahl dam at Chile but was pulled off by an Ohio River tugboat and resumed the trip. Officials cited flood buildup at Meldahl as the sandbar cause. The $214 million ship began its journey Monday from Point Pleasant where built by Marietta Manufacturing Co.
