Veteran labor organizer Mother Jones announced she will mobilize miners' wives to march on operators in Pennsylvania. She said women suffer most in industrial battles and will enlist a battalion of women to aid the miners.
A planned march of non union miners to join a strike is set for tomorrow in Winding Gulf. Union miners will gather at Sullivan Raleigh county and march to Cookstown led by union officials for a meeting two miles away. State police will be deployed to prevent disorders.
Washington reports that the government denied Governor Mechem of New Mexico a request for federal troops to patrol the Gallup mine region amid disorder and shootings. After talks at the White House, Secretary Weeks confirmed the policy that states must show an inability to keep order before federal troops intervene.
April congressional efforts to convene a wage scale conference between coal operators and miners collapse amid dissensions among operators. Phil H. Penna spokesman for Indiana mine owners testified before the House labor committee declaring the plan hopeless.
An American priest-identified man tried to see Cardinal Pompili at his Rome residence. After being denied an audience he assaulted the cardinal’s secretary Monsignor Candelori. Servants seized him, found a revolver, and the assailant escaped in the confusion.

Francis D. Carley, 83, wealthy retired stock broker born in Athens in 1839, died in New York City this week at a brokerage house where he visited for the ticket. He made a fortune in oil in Kentucky, joined Standard Oil before moving to New York in 1895, and retired later but kept visiting Wall Street. He leaves three children: Dr. Frank Carley of St. Petersburg Florida Mrs. Oliver Harriman of New York and Mrs. W Haagens of Hot Springs South Dakota.
