A speaker recalls a beloved child named Jimmy taken by death. Tearful lines describe the lamblike youth, tireless feet, and silent hands, ending with the ache of bereavement and missing embraces. The poem laments death as a merciless departure from a loving family.
A man skate masters evading wolves by circling them in a flooded Northwest forest. He sheds gear and uses expert figure skating to outrun and confuse the pack, who finally abandon pursuit as he returns to safety.
A brisk tale recalls a hard pressed commander denying a subaltern books for transport while allowing a barrel of whisky. The same officer defends a prized so called Toledo blade amid cautions about genuine Damascus steel and counterfeit lore.
In a tale from Harper’s Magazine April issue a preacher Lee Knapp describes a hell scene where the devil judges souls including Secretary Benjamin of the Confederate Cabinet and a man who killed his mother in law. The devil condemns swearing as the worst sin and orders the man to suffer in the hottest flames with torment.
Theodore Nicklas, a youth who killed Dr. Andrew Mead in December, was hanged at Little Valley New York after confessing to the crime. He attacked Mead with a fire shovel, stole the watch and money, was arrested in Buffalo, convicted through the stolen watch, and showed indifference until the end. Father Sorg assisted in prayers as Nicklas died quietly.
A report explains a method used in the East to capture sleeping sea turtles using suckers on femora fish kept in tanks. The fish latch to the turtle and, when hauled in, secure both animals. The piece also quotes a Indiana minister calling oyster eating a sin tied to rogues. if his view spread it could affect the oyster trade.
In Indiana a widower with a large family married a widow with many children. During family prayers the husband asked a blessing only for his own children. The wife rose, struck him with a fire shovel, and since then he has broadened his petitions to include both families.
