Resume Debate In Oil Dispute In Senate

The Senate planned to resume debate on a bill to grant state title to submerged lands off coastlines after a three day Easter weekend. The lands, rich in oil, were adjudicated by Supreme Court rulings favoring federal rights. California Texas and Louisiana are the main states involved. Missing Plane Found Near Elkins West Virginia

Wreckage of an Air Force training plane missing with its pilot since March 27 from Wright Patterson AFB near Dayton was located late Saturday in rugged mountains about 35 miles from Elkins. Ground crew reached the site several hours later.

Munitions Blast Kills 45 Workers in Formosa

An ammunition dump five miles south of Tripeh Formosa exploded with a震quake like jolt killing 43 workers and injuring about 500 as a 12 man team attempted to remove TNT from World War I Japanese aerial bombs. Police arrested the dump foreman.

Testers Trigger 4th Atomic Blast Near Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS NEVAD AEC reports the fourth in a series of nuclear tests conducted at the proving ground near Las Vegas. The daylight blast at 10 30 a m EST flashed northwest and formed a large white cloud despite a ground haze. Observers saw planes in the air and noted the plume rose high in the atmosphere.

Ohio Mishaps Toll Rises Over Easter Weekend

Thirteen people died in Ohio traffic accidents during Easter weekend with six pedestrians among the victims. A fire claimed one life. Notable fatalities include Clarence Sneed Jr. two, struck while his mother bought an Easter chick in Columbus. Frank Angerman fifty nine, struck after stepping from a safety zone in Lima. and David Lutkehaus five, crushed under a bus in Hamilton.

Probers Gather 54 Educators Refusing to Name Communist Ties

Congressional investigators report 54 educators and former educators refused to answer questions about possible Communist links. Of those, 29 were fired or suspended. Harvard University students also declined to respond. Names span East Coast colleges and public and private schools including Harvard, Columbia, Rutgers, New York University, Temple, Ohio State, Howard, Oklahoma, and several city colleges. All invoked the Fifth Amendment.

Harrisburg reports Secret Service and postal inspectors seek Albert J. Drevney, a 35 year old former hospital patient, in connection with threats against President Eisenhower and Harrisburg postmaster Leo A. Werner. Youth Confesses Sharp-Object Incident at Vets Club

In EAST LIVERPOOL a 19-year-old Beaver Falls resident, Alvin Brooks, admitted fatally injuring another man with a sharp object at the Veterans Club after a confrontation with his wife present. Police Chief John Russell quoted John Collins Jr. on finding his wife and Brooks in a booth. Brooks was believed to threaten a public safety item.

63 Year Spat Ends With Faster Wedding

An 89 year-old minister and his 90 year-old former sweetheart married on Easter Sunday at First Baptist Church to reconcile a quarrel that broke their engagement 63 years ago. The Rev. Osgood Colegrove and Isabel Jacobs exchanged vows at the altar marking a happy ending to a long dispute.

Gallia County Fatal Crash Kills Chauncey Johnson Jr

Chauncey Johnson Jr of Gallipolis was killed early Sunday when a car left Route 7 near the Silver Bridge, struck a sign post, and ran over him. Driver John Robert Gordon suffered a fractured arm and bruises. Johnson’s death marked Gallia County’s first fatal highway accident of 1953.

Mother and Four Children Die in Oil Stove Blast

Uniontown Pa. five year old mother and four of her nine children died when an oil stove exploded in a duplex in Edinborn. Father Carter Johnson and a neighbor rescued five other children who sustained burns. He passed the five survivors out a window to a neighbor.

Officer Draws Hidden Pistol as Slavs Gunmen Die

In hot snow near Hot Sulphur Springs Colorado Sheriff Chauncey Van Pelt confronted two gunmen who kidnapped him and tried to flee in his commandeered car. He drew a hidden pistol during a fatal exchange after their vehicle slid into a ditch five miles east of town. The men, sought for murder in Oklahoma, were slain in the gun battle.

Police Hunt 6 fugitives in Miami jail escape

A state wide manhunt is under way for six fugitives from Dade County's skyscraper jail in Miami. Among the escapees are Joseph Albert and William Chapman, both life sentence killers who shot Dr Clifton Springmyer during an attempted clinic robbery. Seven prisoners took control of an elevator and beat a jailer during the breakout. One fugitive was recaptured shortly after.

Auto Bus Collision Near Mansfield Claims Two Lives

An auto and a Greyhound bus collided head-on just north of Mansfield on U S 42. Two men in the car died, the auto driver is critically injured, and 13 bus passengers were treated for minor injuries. John M. Konkel, 49, of Cleveland, is in critical condition at Mansfield General Hospital.

Yanks Rout Reds Near Truce Site

U S Marines battled 175 Chinese near Panmunjom as UN and Allied officers opened talks on prisoner exchanges. A 28-member group including writers actors and others accuse newspapers and TV stations of bias against Senator Joseph McCarthy in a letter to editors of 700 papers.
