Income Tax Return Support Is Explained

Looker explains how support costs affect exemptions for dependents in a case involving a son in nursing training and a daughter. He notes that free room and board, meals, and hospital costs count toward total support, while capital purchases like a car or furniture do not. If total support exceeds $600 for a son with earnings over $600, the father may claim an exemption, but the daughter’s support and relative shares must be considered. The saver is counted in the year spent, not the year earned, and tenants or owners must report mortgage payments but not depreciation.
