The Navy Airship Akron sank 15 miles offshore near Moffett as dawn broke. Only four of 76 aboard were saved and Rear Admiral W A Moffett remains unaccounted. Ships and planes from a dozen ports rush to the scene as Coast Guard lifeboats and state personnel aid rescue efforts.
Antic dirigible Akron, pride of the U.S. Navy and part of a naval air squadron, went down at sea off Light, New Jersey. Of 76 crew members, only four survived as ships and planes searched the area near Barnhead Light. Key figures aboard included Admiral Moffett and Captain Berry.
Report from the Philadelphia Naval District cites control cabin of the Akron with 77 aboard afloat off Barnhead Light. A radio bearing at 5 15 am placed the airship 13 miles east. Commandant notes uncertainty whether the Akron is afloat with a working radio or if a passing ship relayed the bearing.
Detroit, April 3. The first battle in the effort to ratify a federal amendment repealing the Eighteenth Amendment was fought at Michigan polls. Nearly 1,000,000 voters are expected to cast ballots for delegates to a state convention to decide on ratification, with two candidates in each district pledging for or against repeal.
