Annexation referendum petitions filed by city
Petitions seeking a refer end um vote on annexation of Canaan Two were handed to city officials Tuesday. T. W. Gaston presented petitions to City Auditor Robert J. L. Ire, legal custodian for the petitions, with about 445 signatures. If valid, the petitions force a vote among Athens residents on accepting the annexed area into the city, though Canaan Two residents would not vote. County elections action means voters in the annexed area will decide. The area along Route 50E includes the new McBee plant. Gerald Mollica says Lee determines petition validity, then Board of Elections places on November ballot. Should be 10 days after receipt but not less than 90 days before elections. Officials may contact signers to verify signatures. Some signers say petitions were misrepresented. Gaston says no misrepresentation and no high pressure tactics. Studies probe if outsiders can circulate petitions to affect a community’s vote. Mrs. R. C. Chute, 76, of 2 Miller Ave., was taken to Sheltering Arms Hospital after a possible heart attack. emergency squad responded.
