NEW YORK AP The White House backs Byrnes as he heads to UN headquarters after a conference signaling strong Truman support in Iran crisis planning. If Russia and Iran approve troop withdrawal and fair oil deals, the Security Council may shelve the case and await future reports. If not, Byrnes and Cadogan push for ongoing Council action and merits review.
Ohio faces new troubles as Akron transit strike and Cincinnati area electric power strike threaten, with Columbus utility divisions set for Monday walkouts. CIO in Akron rejects arbitration sought by Gov. Lausche. Coal fields idle after miners’ contract lapse. U S Steel to warehouse coke ovens in Fayette County and curtail Pittsburgh district furnaces. Miners parade and speeches honor John Mitchell and John L. Lewis amid stalled wage talks and health fund dispute. Paul Fuller attends as mediator but operators report no progress.
Mayor James A Rhodes warned that any city employee taking part in a shutdown of water, light and sewage plants would be dismissed. Three AFL unions representing about 500 workers voted to halt municipal facilities on April seeking 15 to 25 percent wage increases.
National Farmers Union urged widening social security to include all farming people under old age and survivors insurance. Russell Smith told the House Ways and Means Committee the expansion is now practically feasible.

BELLINGHAM Washington farmer William McLaughlin offered a World War I Distinguished Service Cross in trade for priority on a tractor. He saved five years to buy a tractor but needs nonwar II veteran priority rules to ease purchase. He earned the DSC for singlehandedly wiping out a German machine gun nest.
The fate of the Selective Service Act hung in the balance as the House Military Committee met in a closed session to decide whether to extend the act, for how long, and under what conditions. The 1940 law, expiring May 15, faces renewed debate among lawmakers about an 18 month cap on service for new inductees. In Limerick Ireland two Soviet couriers refused to leave an airliner during refueling at Shannon, with airport authorities permitting them to stay aboard after airline consultation.
BELLAIRE Another attempt was begun today to recover the remaining two bodies of 66 miners trapped in a fire almost two years ago in the Powhatan Mine. The searchers, using an electric loader, reached the section where three bodies were found last fall. State mine chief Stephen Williams said the job would take between a month and six weeks.
Miss Marsne McGinnis a 21 year old teacher from Oxford Ohio was rescued eight hours after being swept from a Hawaii beach. Two school children also clung to wreckage as searchers and air rescue crews aided the trio of missing Ohio teachers. President Truman picks James M. Landis to lead the Civil Aeronautics Board effective June. Landis, Harvard Law School dean, former OC D director and former SEC chairman, will replace L Welch Pogue.
War Labor Board order enforces equal pay for equal work at Campbell and Brier Hill plants. About 1000 women workers received a total of 40000 dollars for war time clerical roles where wages lagged behind men who previously held those jobs.
Massillon city council unanimously votes to ask voters on May 7 for a 1.1 mill tax levy expected to raise about $40,000 yearly to cover higher city government costs.
