Remembering Pomeroy Bend Flood of 1913
POMEROY Ohio April 1 Midday March 30 marked the twelfth anniversary of the peak of the 1913 flood when the Ohio River reached sixty eight feet nine inches. Residents recall how Fourth street areas and hillsides flooded forcing businesses to move goods to upper floors and to shelter in safer structures as streets waters rose rapidly. The disaster damaged streetcars and telephone lines, but no drownings occurred. Martial law was declared to protect life and property as citizens observed the devastation from hilltops and prepared for recovery.
