Fred J. Orr announced to a Banner reporter he will open an architecture office October 1 at the seventh floor of the Southern Mutual building in Athens. He cites admired local and regional projects and school buildings he has designed, with strong credentials and broad support across Georgia.
A police report notes a man named Joe Smith fined $5 for drunkenness last August and again $10 recently. He earlier paid via a friend, who never returned, but the mayor and chief of police finally settled the thirteen month old arrearage by collecting the full amount.
The Bludwine Co invites all school children to a Saturday morning reception at 10 o clock postponed from last week due to rain. Ice cold Bludwine will be served free and a souvenir given to every child. A photographer will be present to capture the assemblage as we plan for 1000 children. Be on time.
Dr Davis Medicine Co announces a sale at the corner of Thomas and Broad streets in Athens offering Shot Gup Tonic and Liniment. Each bottle is guaranteed with free morning treatment for an hour. Prices 25 and 60 cents. Also advertising shelled peas fresh cabbage sickle pears and Seckle pears from Arnold & Abney. Phone 1076.
The Georgia squad held a light practice on Sanford field with signal running planned for Saturday’s game against Alabama Presbyterian College. Ketron, Georgia’s famed 1906 captain, arrived to assist with coaching while Kid Cooley’s return is awaited. The Iron-mines region Alabama team is strong and aims to take Georgia’s scalp. Tickets cost fifty cents in the bleachers and seventy five cents for grandstand. sideline seating is restricted. Game slated for four o’clock with listed lineups for both teams.
Majestic screens The Haunted House an Imp film today with villagers superstition as central. Followed by Flower of the Tribe from Nestor Co. Lynn's orchestra plays 8:30 to 10:30 and Mr Logan sings 4 to 7 and 8 to 11 with proceeds benefiting the High School Athletic Association.
There will be a preparatory service at the First Presbyterian church tonight at 8 p.m. It is to prepare for the quarterly communion on Sunday morning at 1 a.m. Members are urged to attend and others are welcome.
In mayor's court yesterday Mel Edmondson a city fireman stationed at the downtown hall was arraigned for drunk and disorderly conduct and profane language toward officers. The incident occurred on his regularly scheduled day off. A $5 fine was noted and he was suspended pending council review. The committee chaired by Councilman Richards recommended a 30 day suspension with reinstatement contingent on good behavior.
A sparrow built a nest in the crotch of three limbs on an eight foot tall cotton plant in T. W. Shackelford’s field near town. The nest housed eggs and hatchlings that have since flown, leaving only the evidence of a remarkable natural site in a heavy cotton patch.
A newspaper man sought the name of the first depositor. The post office refused, then a city hall clerk revealed ten year old Arthur Crossley Wood as the first dollar depositor, keeping the postmaster’s pledge.
A Clayton street shop installs Goodyear machinery valued between 500 and 31,000 to repair shoes. One stitcher unit records each stitch and bills 5 cents per thousand stitches, with ownership retained by manufacturers and royalty fees applying. The end meters track each stitch as work proceeds.
The street car company orders motormen to run at half speed along the line from the Christian church at Pułaski and Prince to Dougherty and Arnold and Abney stores, Hawkes Brothers at Mancock Avenue and Hull Street due to many accidents on this stretch.
Yesterday Miss Annie Parker presented a tomato weighing about two pounds, described as one of the finest in the region. She grew the fruit at her North Lumpkin street home along with other notable tomatoes, praised for smoothness and quality.
Ath ens long serving fire chief G W McDorman joins a national gathering of fire chiefs in Milwaukee. The veteran leader, in office since the paid department era, sent letters back home and shared thoughtful notes with friends.
A 64 year old man from Wooster Ohio praises Mi-O-Na stomach tablets claiming relief after two doses and calling it the best remedy for indigestion he has used. He notes frequent discomfort from gas heartburn and bloating and says the product is affordable at fifty cents.
Capt Ketron of U6 Georgia football team from Clarkesville visited Sanford Field this week to observe the current squads. A former four year center for Georgia he works with Coach Cunningham to develop and strengthen the lines amid large turnout and growing promise at practice.

A 1912 Cadillac touring car described as a thirty horsepower self starting model was driven from Atlanta to the city by John White Morton. The five passenger car features automatic electric starting, electric lights, two ignition systems, a Delco plant, and a built in motor that turns the engine over then reverts to a dynamo once started. The car boasts larger wheels, tires, brake drums and a steel body in a modern design.
Early today a house on Crowe street in Athens known as the Robert Chappell residence burned to the ground. The origin is undetermined at press time as the fire was discovered after it was well underway. Tax Receiver J. M. Dorsey owned the place and had lived there for years. Mr. Archer was residing there recently. The family escaped with part of their belongings saved.
The Essanay picture The Burglarized Burglar will be at the Elite today. It is original and amusing with entertaining complications. Admission 50 cents. Cooking apples 35 cents a peck. Arnold and Abney, phone 1076.
A large opening reception at the Athens Y M C A features readings by Mrs. Ora Hart Avery and soprano Elizabeth Gertrude Wood of Chicago. Musical selections by Morris on cornet and a male quartet will entertain. Athletic events include a student Y M C A basketball game and balancing stunts between halves. The mysterious Wolly Toggles are billed as a highlight with two act in captivity. Doors open 8 20 p m with refreshments by the Ladies Auxiliary.
