The board of education met to authorize an additional teacher for Nantahale avenue. night school and kindergarten moved from Oak street to Oconee street school. A resolution thanked the ladies who own the former building and urged sale proceeds to be donated to schools. Miss Ruby Anderson was elected seventh grade teacher at Baxter street school.
The Ina Lehr Dramatic Stock Co presents The Great Diamond Robbery at the Majestic with matinee and evening shows today. Miss Lehr extends her stay for an indefinite engagement, promising high quality entertainment at admission prices of 10 and 20 cents.
Auction style ad lists corn and green beans at 25 cents a gallon from Arnold and Abney. Included is a political note declaring that the election shall be deemed elected for the unexpired term and that officers will assume duties after qualifying.
The Homer Georgia superior court halted for the week as Pink Hegwood, a notorious defendant with a troubled family history, faced a new trial for murder. Horace Denton, about 20, a Southern Manufacturing Company mill worker, was stabbed to death at Comer Bullocks home near the factory village after a dispute with companion Jack Scoggins. Scoggins fled the scene as officers arrived. Denton died within minutes from neck and chest wounds.
In Banks county Homer court yesterday a white man named Seay was charged with selling liquor. As the sheriff sought a bondsman Seay drew a pistol from his hip pocket in the open courtroom. The officer seized the weapon and Seay received six months for carrying concealed weapons, with the liquor case remaining for future action.
Last night the First Methodist church hosted the fall and winter opening for the Sunday school officers and teachers with full attendance and lively enthusiasm. Supper was served by Sunday school ladies. New superintendents were selected for several departments including Susie Davidson for home, Claud Tuck for junior, and Guest for the student department. A large men’s class with Dr. N G Slaughter as president and others drew much comment as more men join. Apples were offered at 25 to 35 cents per peck.
Two inspectors recently visiting the Athens post office urged the removal of Postmaster William Fleming. Acknowledging the inspectors' findings, the Post Office Department stated his successor would be named and installed by early October, with Fleming given until September 29 to resign. If he does not resign, removal will occur automatically.
Judge Brand adjourned Banks County superior court after a week that drew forty five visiting lawyers from Athens Gainesville Jefferson Atlanta and other towns. The Homer term was the longest in county history with crowded hotels and crowds unseen before. An adjourned term is set for the fourth Monday in November and the Carr Boyd Co failure at Maysville involved many people and suits.
The Rev Charles Underwood Butler pastor at Tabernacle Baptist in Athens received a cablegram inviting him to join an eight months campaign of revival meetings in Scotland led by Alexander the famous worker and singer. Butler has not decided his course yet amid the Middle Mississippi revival. The item also notes baggage loss and local notices about boarding and produce prices.
Mr. Max Jacobv, long in the tobacco business in this city, is visiting from New York with his wife and young son for several days to see relatives.
