Examinations for entrance of new students into the public schools begin Monday at 9 o clock. Teachers must be at their rooms. Principals will decide if one or two days are needed, likely Monday and Tuesday. The fall term starts Wednesday, September 6, with attendance expected to challenge seating plans.
In Clarkeesville a Habersham Good Roads rally and barbecue drew about fifty citizens to hear leaders discuss systematic road building. Notable attendees included J N Kitchen and Prof C M Strahan from the University of Georgia, with Wm Eberhart presiding and Clayton Mathews organizing the event.
The Clarke Rifles now with the fourth battalion prepare to start an officers' school for non commissioned officers next Wednesday at the armory. Second Lieutenant Dobbs will conduct it as Captain Arnold and First Lieutenant Anderton push training goals. Rifle range practice will resume soon with a long nearby range three miles out, and visits have been made by Elberton Winder and University cadets to Sandy Creek range.
Athens friends greeted Speaker Holder of the Georgia House in the General Assembly yesterday. He traveled from Jefferson to mingle with locals and said he is receiving many requests to announce for the governor’s vacancy and will state his plans in a few days.
Mr N M Embree purchases Elegant Cafe from H C Compton on Clayton street. He vows to maintain top cold drinks and fine tobaccos, aims to retain Compton’s liberal patronage and grow it with prompt courteous service. New to Athens, he plans deep community ties and invites patrons to visit. Geologist McCallie, Senator Jim Price, Dr John E Miller and Mr Kitchens spoke on roads, praising Clarke county roads and the good roads cause in Habersham hills county.
The Seaboard Air Line Railway relocates its passenger station to a new brown sandstone and cream brick building, sharing space with Gainesville Midland offices. The facility features mission oak interiors, modern waiting rooms, steam heat, two hundred foot waterproof shed, new approaches, and planned landscaping. Mr Whyte moves to Richmond while Mr Curry arrives from Wilmington. The station combines convenience, style, and future capacity for crowds.
A twin watermelon was shown on city streets to scores of observers. The fruit appeared average in size and color but was a double-breasted twin growth. The owner, described as peculiar, refused to reveal his name or farm location, insisting on secrecy about his fruit and plantation.
One Athens Realty Company keeps a steady sale pace this week. Erwin & Company sold the Crawford W. Long home through Shackelford Brothers to W. T. Bryan, then a Blomfield street lot to J. Y. Dunaway for R. N. Busser. A Milledge avenue lot in the Erwin Hinton subdivision sold to Miss Fannie E. Nute of Atlanta who will build there.
In Gainesville on September 1, Hall county court disposed of 63 criminal cases in two and a half days. Monday saw 26 trials with 19 convictions, 4 not pressed, 2 directed verdicts acquittal, and 1 not guilty. Tuesday had 16 dispositions and Wednesday morning 21, 11 bond forfeitures. Civil business filled five days with about 60 cases called and 40 trials. Judge Robert Hodges presided efficiently, earning praise for brisk, effective management.
A local note from Arnold and Abney promotes an old fashioned pound cake as a cheaper, tastier alternative to homemade. The cake is priced at 30 cents per pound, highlighting its value for entertaining guests.

Pendley advertises eye fittings at 335 Clayton Street and Father Clark announces Catholic Mass with Benediction at the local church tomorrow at 10 30 AM with all invited.
The Daily Banner reports the ongoing subscription contest could top one million votes before closing hours Monday night with two days left. Contestants vie fiercely as judges prepare Tuesday to tally records and announce Wednesday morning winners. A second prize is a mahogany furniture set valued at around $150 from Dorsey & Funkenstein's store.
Night tally shows Mrs Chandler with .462,500 while Miss McDorman posts .415,800 Miss Pierce registers .100,200 and Miss Harris reports .16,545 in the sequence of late evening totals.
In city court Mrs. Pelfry's suit against Central of Georgia Railway Company over her husband's death continued yesterday. A motion to non suit was overruled by Judge West. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for 1500. Also noted is Mr. Herbert Miller's return to Athens after weeks near Brunswick.

The comedy by Paul M Potter comes after a three hundred night run in New York. Louie Sedaine plays The Girl from Rector's a merry witty figure pursued by Rich ard O Shaughnessy amid a tangle of disguises and romance as Gen Andrew Tandy and Mrs Caperton hide within high society. The South reception promises a strong cast and loud laughter from curtain rise to curtain fall.
Dr. J. M. Lynch arrives with wife and two daughters and will preach tomorrow at the First Baptist church. Congregation and officials greet the distinguished minister at the Hotel Georgian while the church undergoes renovations. A reception is planned for next week with plans still being finalized.
