Larry Gantt urges Southern farmers to plant wheat now for November sowing, arguing past declines in wheat acreage harm flour mills and food supply. New York J A Hopkins, chairman of the committee of forty eight, issued a letter to President Harding demanding Attorney General Daugherty be suspended pending impeachment charges from Representative Kellar of Minnesota. The letter notes an earlier reply saying the matter would receive serious consideration and criticizes involving Daugherty in the referral.
The Sunday Y Club held a meeting Sunday afternoon with 70 boys counted present, the largest turnout yet. Detroit led in new members with William Anthony captaining. The Times suggests the mission to negotiate Britain’s debt funding will likely depart for the United States between the end of the elections and Christmas. Its personnel has not yet been decided.
Judge Charles H. Brand secures an amendment to the Federal Farm Loan Board rules allowing loans to applicants who farm but do not live on the farm. The change lets bankers and business owners obtain loans if they operate farms properly and meet the act’s purposes. The board now interprets eligibility to include those engaged in other lines who own or operate farms.
The Athens delegation sails to Macon for the 136th grand communication meeting Tuesday. A Fort Oglethorpe degree team led by Major J. M. Troutt visits for a ceremonial degree at City Hall.
The Fast Mail now playing at the Elite Theatre stars Charles Jones and Eileen Percy in a Fox stage melodrama. Jones performs daring stunts including a railroad gate leap and a perilous swing over a telegraph wire, while the couple’s daring escapes keep audiences on their feet as they end with a kiss high in a tree. The show runs again today.
Augusta announces Palmer, Phinizy & Connell purchased the Tompkins-Connell Motor Company's Studebaker auto business. Chas H Phinizy Jr joins with F S Palmer and A J Connell to run the new firm at 627 629 Broad Street with full parts stock and a planned local showroom soon.
John J Wilkins Jr wins the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co guessing contest at the welfare booth during the Athens fair. Ashworth notes unprecedented interest as the exhibit handed out ten thousand wax cups and twenty thousand welfare publications. Next year the company plans larger displays and an on site hospital and rest room as part of its exhibit at bigger fairs. The Athens district lists industrial police activity the week of October 23. The winner guessed 21 123.
The Greenwich Village Girl musical, on tour three weeks with Athens stops, closed Saturday night in Augusta due to poor business. Top ticket was $1.50 and the show drew fairly well locally but was mercilessly panned. Lead performer Mr. HI has two other shows, Bringing Up Father and Mutt and Jeff, said to be doing well.
Building permits in Athens for the year are expected to exceed five hundred thousand dollars. Large business and residential improvements drive the total, with the Michael home on Milledge Avenue valued at 28000 as the year’s largest residence permit. Additional work includes expansions at Athens Manufacturing, a new storage plant for Atlantic Telegraph, remodeling for Commercial Bank, Johnson’s pool room, and Lincoln-Boley building. Totals for paving and a bridge across the Oconee river push the year toward a near million-dollar level. Next year promises more big projects including a new dormitory and Alumni Hall on the Georgia campus.
Mr R T Dottery from the First Ward announces his candidacy for re election. He has served as councilman for many years and his record shows devoted service to the entire community. Dottery faces no opposition and is praised for his long term public spirit and popularity in the ward. An unrelated fashion note mentions a colorful satin duvetyn skirt and narrow coat with seal buttons.
