Hundreds visited Banner's Auto Electric Show as weather improved. The parade, led by Sheriff Walter Jackson and the Morris band, will form at the Washington street entrance at 3:30 with cars lining up from 3:00 and prizes awarded after the procession.
The Internal Revenue Bureau reports that fraudulent tax evasion over the past three years was uncovered, with more than 50 million dollars in fraud detected and over 22.5 million dollars recovered, showing the bureau more than paid its expenses.
The war department has ordered more than 200 aeroplanes as the first step in expanding the aviation service under the army re organization act. A contract for about a hundred more machines will be awarded soon. Nearly a hundred of the planes are for use in the regular army training school at San Diego and the National Guard schools at Mineola New York and Chicago.
An Athens event invites all car owners to join a noncompetitive parade starting at the auditorium and looping through downtown streets. Prizes include five dollars in gold, a warning signal horn, and motor oil, funded by local businesses.
President Wilson spoke at the Chicago press club predicting a revival of patriotic responsibility and urged progressiveness. He addressed women urging greater participation and supported the eight hour workday. An attempted disruption by the National Woman's Party sparked clashes as banners were torn and protesters struck, with police protection for onlookers as Wilson entered.
The Evangelist Cross will deliver a talk to children this afternoon at 3 30 at the Christian church. Children should bring a lead pencil to help see the point. Last night the subject was The Devils Barbershop and the story of Samson. Tonight the theme will be Noah Ark. Sunday afternoon there will be a men service with The Third Degree Man as theme. Also advertised are groceries and candies at Arnold Abney and Thornton or King Hodgson Co with specials on produce and hams.
New York reports Cunard liner Alaunia sunk by a mine in the English Channel while en route to London from Falmouth. The ship had landed 243 passengers, including 21 Americans, and most of the crew were saved except four.
Forty men masked with bandannas attacked an English avenue car in Atlanta at night wounding the motorman. The conductor and three deputies aboard were unhurt. Deputies added to the car after warnings of the planned assault. Night service on the line was curtailed due to a recent carmen strike. No arrests yet.
Accompanied by the S. M. C. brass band of fifteen pieces led by J. L. Morris, the Chamber of Commerce delegation will depart Clayton Street office this morning between 8 and 8:30 for Washington Wilkes to attend the East Georgia Fair and mingle with attendees from Wilkes and nearby counties.
Milledegville Ga October 19 trustees decide due to high feeding costs to return home inmates deemed dangerous to society at the 4200 inmate state hospital for the insane.
Dr Will Moss heads a Harvard School of Medicine research party studying South American diseases in the Andean region. The expedition includes several scientists guides and camp outfits with a laboratory for on site experiments. Moss reports the team will be away for months and unreachable except by occasional mail via a foot messenger.
Two more dollars were subscribed yesterday to the Wilson campaign fund Dr. T. O. Middlebrooks of Bogart donated 1 and Mr. Arthur Cox of Athens 1 raising the total to 405 dollars from existing gifts. Republicans are running a nation wide ad campaign spending thousands daily including a two page ad in the Saturday Evening Post costing over 6000 dollars. If large sums can be spent on advertising what will other resources for all uses amount to. Democrats urged to support legitimate campaign expenses.
Washington reports a southern storm and central west disturbance merge into a weak low over a broad area. Cold weather is forecast for Friday or Friday night, with light frosts expected in Gulf States and a frosty Gulf district night.
Bayonne New Jersey workers at Standard Oil ended a ten day strike by voting tonight to resume work tomorrow. Negotiations may address wage and condition demands after rioting left three dead and many injured.
Panic stricken inhabitants report Villa and portion of his command have taken possession of San Andreas, driving residents toward Chihuahua. They accuse him of burning houses and committing atrocities against women and children.
In a full Superior Court session, the Computing Cloth Measuring Machine Company v. R. Brandt and others focused on jurisdiction. Proceedings resume today with LaPrade's disorder case, grand jury presentments expected this afternoon, and Allen Abrams jailed for burglary with a 65 dollar fine and twelve months. Additional guilty pleas lead to more sentences this afternoon. King Hodgson Co. promotions for turnip salad and cakes noted.
Washington reports Romanian forces, after holding the Teutons in mountain passes, have gone on the offensive at multiple points. Paris notes French gains near the Somme while other fronts show no decisive changes. Berlin and Petrograd claim each side has slight advances and repulsed attacks. In Berlin, Field Marshal von Kluck retires at his own request after being wounded in 1914.
