The Coquette Oil Well of Oil Creek Legend

A letter from Petroleum Center Pa recounts the Hyde Egbert oil farm near Oil Creek where the Coquette well yielded 2000 barrels daily after a dream inspired sinking a well. Dr Egbert profited greatly and shared $20000 with the dreamer who later married the rejected coquette. The well later exhausted.

Augusta Native Seeks Help After Deserted by Husband

A white woman named Elizabeth Whitmore, with three children, arrived in Charleston seeking aid. Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, she says her Mississippi husband deserted her and returned with another woman, leaving them to starve. She traveled to Charleston to reach uncle Charles Anderson, who offered a home if she could fund the journey. Lieutenant Heidt and Commissioner Degen of the Almshouse arranged shelter for her and her children at the Almshouse.
