Allied forces repelled a German attempt to seize Ostend Dunkirk and Calais. The German offensive stalled after desperate fighting as the marching wing kept contact along the coast. West of Lille German troops retreated from Laventie following a pitched engagement.
French official statements describe Allies press along the coast near the Franco-Belgian frontier with Ostend and Dunkirk in proximity. German efforts to break lines face heavy resistance as battles unfold from Paris to Metz and east Prussia with heavy troop engagements and naval losses.
A Boulogne 4 dispatch to the Daily Mail dated Friday reports that Germans have evacuated Lille as of Friday. The notice cites Allied military developments and places Lille in a state of strategic withdrawal.
Rome reports the council of ministers decided Premier Salandra would temporarily occupy the war portfolio after the death of Marquis Antonio di Sangiuliano minister of foreign affairs. The king's and premier's plans for a permanent appointment remain undecided.
