House Refuses to Increase Members
Washington reports the house votes 146 to 142 to pre commit to the census committee on Siegel bill to raise size from 435 to 460 members after nine hours of debate. Opponents argue the body is unwieldy and extra members would not boost efficiency. This marks the second such action in a year, previous defeat of a plan to reach 483 members.
