Payne Dies at 76. Five Sons and Son-in-Law to Act as Pallbearers
J W Payne 76, Confederate veteran and Christian church member, died of paralysis at his daughter Mrs P B Crowe's home on Jackson Street. He leaves three daughters and five sons. Funeral today at 11 from the residence, with burial at Kluts cemetery in Oconee County. His five sons and son-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Chicken theft Uses Car To Flee In Athens Night
Police were alerted around midnight to four fine chickens stolen from W. P. Head on Hill Street. Head saw the thief enter a waiting automobile and drive off with a cap obscuring the suspect. Officers did not catch the culprits before morning.

At the Silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Vess on State Street a large crowd gathered in the parlors reception hall and on the front verandah. The porch pulled loose from the house and toppled into the yard though no one was hurt. Mr. Vess was ill in bed and unable to join the festivities.
