The county's clerk argues the present courthouse is insufficient for growing business and records storage. He notes limited desk space, poor light and ventilation, fire risk, and the need for a modern, fireproof wing or new location to improve access and safety. The bond vote interest grows as officials push for a larger, better placed courthouse.
The Majestic continues with two reels of fine films every day. Today's feature is The Best Policy from Solax Co followed by the comedy Three Million Dollars by the American Co. Mr Atwood will sing this week with the Lynn orchestra each night.
The Lyric presents The Matchmaker with Miss Lawrence and Arthur Johnson in leading roles. Walter's orchestra performs at night. Quality Bread from Athena Bakery promotes fresh baked loaves in two sizes, bc and 10c, by Arnold & Abney.
The third annual convention gathers delegates from Virginia West Virginia Georgia Tennessee Kentucky and the Carolinas in Roanoke with Dr Joseph Hyde Pratt presiding. Prof C M Strahan of Georgia University Athens expected to speak but attends duties at home. Dr Andrew M Soule of the Georgia College declines due to reorganizing work. Col B W McCallie Georgia state geologist steps in for welcomes.
Yesterday morning Clerk Tate Wright issued a $100 warrant on the county treasury to Ed M Hafer of Atlanta and handed it to A W Brooks secretary of the local chamber to forward to the state organization preparing a state exhibit for the Chicago Land and Irrigation Exposition. Clarke County has supported the effort to present Georgia to western settlers and will be represented with the goods.
Funeral services were held yesterday at Emmanuel church on Prince Avenue for Llewellyn Dearing who died suddenly in Augusta Tuesday morning. The burial took place in Oconee cemetery near his boyhood home and schools, with many friends in attendance.
A ten dollar reward is offered for the return of money lost between the Georgia National Bank and Col Dubose's office in the Southern Mutual Building. Rewards will be paid to any person returning the amount to Mrs M P Briscoe at 380 Lumpkin Street.
Clarke County officials adjust plans for the Southern Railway Good Roads Train visit after a telegram from Hurlburt cancels 3 p.m. meetings and supper. A large delegation from Clarke, including the board, city council, chamber, University, and State College of Agriculture, will still meet the train at 1:30 p.m. to view exhibits and hear talks on road improvement by U S Department of Agriculture experts.
At Clarke County meeting Tuesday the board noted a complaint from J F Comer against W T Lester for disorganizing labor while enforcing cattle tick inspections. The board asked federal and state authorities to review the incident and sought adjustment of the matter.
Miss Louise Smith of Atlanta becomes librarian for the State College of Agriculture succeeding Miss Lucy G. Yancey. Smith is Carnegie library trained with New York experience. Miss Jessie Hutchinson named assistant to Duncan Burnett, librarian for the University, replacing Miss Inez Daughtry of Jackson. Also notes local ads for Educator crackers and baked goods.
Fellows named in biology and physics at the University of Georgia to assist with teaching due to unusually large freshman class. W L Savell, a student of Athens, becomes physics fellow while P L Hudson, son of Rev F S Hudson of Jefferson, becomes biology fellow. Appointments made yesterday morning.
In the chapel the University of Georgia class of 1911 chose officers after a heated campaign. President Joe H. Ross of Brunswick, vice president Charles Joel of Athens, secretary treasurer Paul Hudson of Jefferson, historian H. S. Langston of Monroe, poet Charles H. Stone of Athens, and chaplain W. M. Lucas of Waverly Hall were selected. The senior class numbers seventy men.
Prof J L Bishop joins the State College of Agriculture faculty to teach animal husbandry and extension work. He arrives in Macon this week to prepare department exhibits for the state fair. A Virginia Agricultural College graduate with a Wisconsin master’s, he comes highly recommended by Dr Soule. The Athens community welcomes him as a new citizen and educator.
The Biograph at the Elite shows The Revenue Man and the Girl a beautiful love story full of interest and excitement. Haughey's orchestra will perform tonight. Arnold and Abney advertise shelled pecans and shelled almonds.
The 29th annual Georgia WCTU convention will convene in Savannah from October 11 to 13 with all day sessions October 10. Notables include Hon. Richmond P. Hobson and Mrs. Mary Harris Armour, plus Tina Tucker and A B Conyers among speakers and performers.
This morning at 10 o clock the Athens bar is requested by Judge Brand to meet at city hall to conference before the calendar for Clarke Superior Court fall term is fixed. Supersedeas and quo warranto proceedings concerning the city court judgeship are set for hearing at the same hour and place.
Mr J Van Straaten opens a new sanitary bakery on Clayton street praised for cleanliness and modern equipment including an electric mix and tiled oven with steam appliances. The city showcases the bakery as a proud new enterprise. An exhibition at Mrs W A Ivey's features fall styles in data.
