Walter Hodgson receives praise for work on playgrounds and play projects at Sam Harris' School. The event included a musical program tour of the building and a luncheon honoring Hodgson for his service and community contributions.
Athens Kiwanis Club toured the municipally supported Negro high school, Sam Harris leading progress efforts. Members praised facilities, cheerfulness, and student discipline, pledging support for more space and resources to expand the school’s programs.
Larry Gantt reports on A J Gillen of Maxeys and Frank Lipscomb trialing peanuts to replace cotton amid boll weevil fear. Gillen describes 500 acres of Little White Spanish peanuts, high yields, low fertilizer use, and strong demand at $97 per ton. Lipscomb also experiments with the crop.
The Georgia freshmen under Coach Bill White travel to Chapel Hill to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in a key Saturday contest. Georgia and Vanderbilt also contest at Sanford Field as the Bullpups seek a tough road test after wins over Riverside, Dahlonega, Wofford, and Clemson freshmen, with 93 points scored to 25 by opponents. Eighteen players, including White and Prof. W. C. Payne, accompany the party.
Funeral services for Reynolds Smith the young son of Mr and Mrs J Warren Smith of Milledge Circle were held Thursday at 4 pm with Dr Walter Anthony of the First Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Oconee Cemetery. Driver John Mines is jailed on a murder warrant. preliminary hearing expected soon before Judge Milton Thomas. The boy died after being struck by Mines delivery truck while near Tate Wrights store. witnesses described high speed and the truck backing up to retrieve the body.
Tickets remain for Thalian Play as most of the reservations have sold. Business Manager Harold Kassewitz announced Thursday night that a few seats are on sale at the Colonial Theater, and Mrs Temples Telegram is expected to draw a packed audience tonight.
The Peabody Club will discuss taxation at its next meeting with University of Georgia faculty speakers Dr. Jere M. Bound Dr. R. P. Brooks and Dr. J McPherson. A dinner by the State Normal School Household Arts Department preceded the talk with Professor James G. Johnson presenting a paper on The Spanish Regime in Georgia and South Carolina.
Macon Georgia Bishop W N Ainsworth Wesleyan College announces purchase of the Flourney tract at Rivoli six miles west of Macon and plans to erect a one million dollar plant there within the next few years.
Frank Myers died after a paralytic stroke at age 57 in Athens Georgia. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 4 30 conducted by Rabbi Stern with interment in Oconee cemetery. Active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed. Myers, born September 4 188,4, in Crawfordville Georgia, was a prominent local businessman with wide Georgia ties and survived by wife Monophic Stern and one son Joe. The notice notes his prominence and broad circle of friends and relatives.
Atlanta reports say Mrs. W. H. Felton and Senator Walter F. George will meet Friday to discuss Felton taking the oath as U S senator. George may relinquish his seat briefly to allow the oath, amid unresolved credentials from fourteen Georgia counties.
Secretary Weeks opens a nationwide gathering on mental moral and physical fitness stressing national defense as the core issue. He warns that the future of the nation and civilization rests on healthier bodies and citizen patriotism, calling for early physical training from grammar school onward and united civic effort. A road inspection party led by John N. Holder, chairman of the state highway board, with State Highway Engineer W. R. Neel and board members Neely and Bennett, spent the night in Athens en route from Waynesboro to Hartwell. They will inspect roads in the Athens and Augusta districts.

A group of citizens was fired on from a bush in Hot Springs Arkansas. Jeff Howell of Buckville was killed and Earnest Wheatley and Newkirk of Jessieville were wounded. Moonshiners or bootleggers are suspected.
Muriel MacSwiney widow of CorkLord Mayor Terence MacSwiney planned to rest in Virginia before resuming her speaking tour for the Irish Republic. She and two others were discharged after a brief hearing on charges under a federal statute guarding foreign representatives, with the court ruling the act did not meet its intended scope. The defendants had been part of a picket displaying banners calling for the Irish republic and the prisoner release, asserting the British Free State.
