Reports from London and Washington recount Germany’s capitulation and the end of four years of war. Celebrations erupt worldwide as leaders, troops, and citizens greet peace, with revolutions and demobilization shaping the postwar order.
President announces armistice terms to Congress detailing German cessation of hostilities on land and in the air, rapid evacuation of Belgium France Alsace Lorraine Luxemburg, repatriation of civilians, surrender of weapons, and occupation rules for western territories with safeguards to protect civilians and property.
Washington reports the war department moves to cancel draft calls after armistice. Secretary Baker and General Crowder direct continued classification efforts for 19 to 37 year olds while stopping work on those over 37. Provisions also detail surrender of submarines and disarmament of German ships under allied supervision.
World wide peace and victory over Germany were celebrated in Athens with bells chiming from city hall, a large university parade, and a mass gathering led by Mayor Erwin. The Banner published early extras, reported abdication and armistice, and praised its timely, reliable coverage.
The United War Work Campaign launches at the YMCA with early pledges totaling 9871.05 toward a 25000 goal, plus a 60 percent oversubscription plan to 37500. Victory Girls and Boys pledged 211 and 157.50 respectively, with 47 pledges totaling 368.50. The drive honors war workers and the return home of heroes as camp life continues overseas. London armistice terms set prisoner returns to be handled at the peace conference.
