Derby Fever Grips London as Americans Enter

London May 25 Interest in the Derby at Epsom Downs tomorrow runs fever heat with several American horses in the field. Bets surge on Sir Martin owned by Louis Winans who bought him from J. P. Madden. An American winner would be almost unprecedented in the Derby’s 130-year history. The Derby, begun in 1780, is the pinnacle of the English turf though not the oldest English classic, with St Leger 1776 and Oaks 177 to precede it. Diomed's Derby in 1780 helped American bloodlines, while the race has seen multiple wins by famed owners like Lord Egremont and Sir J. Hawley. Spearmint holds the fastest Derby time at 2 36 4 5.
