Dr. R A Torrey leads morning services focusing on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and its necessity with a series of talks this week. He references conscience, sin, and salvation while inviting skeptics to attend and reflect on spiritual refuge and biblical study.
President receives first hand information on Mexico from special commissioner Duval West who returned from Mexico. Report likely to preserve current U S policy despite factions Carranza and Villa claiming victory.
Mrs Mintia Bailey widow of George Bailey died at her son James Bailey’s home 198 Baldwin street after several weeks illness. Funeral conducted by Rev W M Saye at 3:30 pm from the residence with pallbearers Adolphus Wood Charles James Judson Huff A R Wood Will Joiner and Frank Colley meeting at Dorsey's Parlor at 3:00 pm. She was 69, long active in the Baptist church and a devoted mother grandmother and friend.
Governor John M. Slaton announced the Board of Visitors to inspect the University during the coming commencement season. Named were Prof. T. E. Jones of Griffin, Prof. H. B. Ritchie of Fitzgerald, Prof. N. H. Ballard of Brunswick, Prof. S. J. Smith of Tallapoosa, and Hon. A. G. Golucke of Crawfordville.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers today unanimously adopted a resolution urging enactment of a law requiring the use of power headlights. The action was reported from Cleveland where the AP dispatch notes strong support for enhanced locomotive safety.
Nine miners died today in an explosion at Mine No. 1 of the Valley Smokeless Coal Company near Johnstown Pennsylvania. The incident occurred in the Valley area and contributes to a tragic mining disaster recap in the region.
London reports rapid escalation after Austria and Italy declare war. German and Austrian forces mass near Verona while Italian and Austrian guards exchange fire in Tyrol. Britain and allies expect a swift drive aided by German heavy artillery and air power. Navy actions include attacks on Adriatic and Venice.
Yesterday the University held its final assembly of the year. A unanimous resolution praised President Wilson in the international crisis. Chancellor Barrow addressed seniors and the student body. The seniors challenged the faculty to a ball game on Sanford Field next Saturday at 8 30 PM and the challenge was accepted.
Washington May 24 British ambassador Sir Cecil Spring-Rice said Britain understands unofficial cotton cargo arrangements do not involve the United States government. He added the U S was not a party to the agreement and did not participate in the conference.
Mrs. M. C. Mangleburg aged 65 died Sunday night at 1135 Prince avenue from heart trouble. Funeral at 6:30 PM from her home conducted by Rev. C. C. Jarrell of First Methodist. Interment in Oconee Cemetery. Pallbearers were her three sons C. S. Mangleburg F. M. Mangleburg and G. T. Mangleburg along with M. B. Dodd Lamar Scott and Jos. Fambro. Survived by three daughters Mrs. P. G. Thompson Fountain Inn S C Mrs Ash of this city Lizzie and Belle Mangleburg. She was a devout church member and devoted mother in a life praised for its influence.
The Winston-Salem Journal dedicates a full section to Salem College and this year’s commencement. The 140 year old school counts prominent women from Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia among its attendees. Judge McWhorter's mother graduated there and granddaughter Sallie McWhorter is aware of the Georgia Club this year.
A called meeting endorsed by the mayor and council adopted a report from the board of health urging immediate enlargement of the waterworks to add fourteen filters and equipment for chlorine purification and daily tests. The project, totaling about five thousand dollars, aims to nearly double the plant’s capacity within forty five days to meet growing demand.
The Guaranty Investment and Loan Company, newly chartered with ample capital, yesterday elected J. J. Wilkins as president, J. Warren Smith as vice president, R. F. Freeman as secretary and treasurer, E. L. Wilkins as assistant secretary and treasurer, with C. H. Phinizy, Aaron Cohen, and J. A. Darwin as directors. The firm states its business aligns with its name and expects ordinary patronage.
At the Pan American financial congress opening session on May 24 in Washington officials outlined obstacles to prosperity from the European war. Calls were made for transport development, financial exchange readjustment, and uniform commerce laws. Committees from participating nations were appointed to draft uniform statutes.
Last night police arrested a Warren man on a misdemeanor charge. Several white youths faced disorderly conduct charges with details not released. A raid on a East Athens pasteboard party led to four colored men being arrested for alleged gambling. Two crapshoot groups appeared with eight colored defendants fined 10 dollars each and two sent to the stockade. The eight white defendants did not show up and surrendered five dollar bonds each.
