Athens officials discuss city hall improvements and charter amendments at a called council meeting. They tabled repainting the city hall interior, approved a coal bin cost, and considered changing inauguration date to January 1. A civil service board bill was debated but dropped.
Mr Ray C Werner argued for state control of public water supplies with strong approval from the chamber. G F Harley illustrated malaria risks at regional dam projects and urged health authority preinspection of pond areas. Speakers urged enlarging State Board of Health powers and funds to supervise water supply and pollution control. The session closed with thanks to Werner and Harley.
In the annual meeting last night the Talians named officers for 1915-16 led by President Geo Harrison and Vice President C A Koch. The Silver Box by Galsworthy will be the commencement play to be staged Friday night June 11. The banquet is set for June 9 to avoid commencement rush with Hirschburg Morrison Pinkussohn and President Clark Flowell on the banquet committee.
The Jay H. Epting Co advertises a one day sale of Palm Beach suits for 4.98 on Broad Street. Forty eight suits in sizes 34 to 46 are offered with fit and quality guaranteed and home delivery if needed. Also offers athletic underwear at 25 cents and elastic seam drawers at 29 cents.
A two reel war drama The Belgians Relief made in Georgia features St Elmo Massengale and Miss Slmeda Holcomb with Washington Seminary students in scenes. Proceeds aid Belgian relief with a companion Pathe short It’s a Long Way to Tipperary. Screenings at Lyric Theater benefit a charity through Madame Lustrat.
London dispatches report Germany expects Italy to abandon the Triple Alliance and enter the war on the side of the Entente as early as the coming days. British and French troops press the German line while Germany and Austria push eastern offensives. Kitchener calls for 300000 recruits as asphyxiation gas tactics draw notice. Consuls demand passports from Rome amid mixed reports on Berlin’s stance.
Athens observes a Christ Day fasting and prayer event led by Dr. Torrey with hundreds from Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and Christian churches abstaining from meal to seek conviction, conversion, and spiritual quickening. Morning family altars and business prayers accompany the campaign.
The trial of R. W. Woods former cashier of Citizens Bank opened after a nearly $20 000 embezzlement charge. A full jury was seated and two witnesses testified with W. S. Johns detailing cash books and ledgers as proceedings continued.
Judge Daniel cannot try the Griffin case on the 31st. Judge Brand has arranged with Judge B H Hill of Atlanta to sit that week. Judge Brand will preside for Judge Hill next week in Atlanta.
W A Baker addressed the University of Georgia School of Commerce on corporation finance last evening, ending a series of talks by commercial experts. He praised the school's work and discussed securities, issue proportions, financing types, capitalization, reserves, and related topics, with two more talks planned.
A University Sophomore class meeting in the chapel elected L. A. Paine as chair and R. D. Hutson as vice president. Officers named include M. P. Moore secretary H. F. Colquitt treasurer J. E. Mundy historian C. S. Baldwin poet and E. R. Black chaplain.
A reviewer urges seeing the Lyric war pictures highlighting an Atlanta filmed scenario written by Meyers Dean with Dr. May the French consul and local figures. The Pathe Tipperary piece supports the Belgian relief effort. Proceeds benefit wet era relief work, promising generous heart dividends.
Macon Georgia May 18 seven officers and directors of the Commercial National Bank of Macon were indicted by the federal grand jury on misapplication of funds tied to alleged excessive loans and false entries in reports to the comptroller of currency. Indicted are E Y Mallary J J Cobb Thad C Parker E Nyelks Frank L Mallary E Nat Lewis and Leon B Dure. The Commercial National was absorbed by other banks last year.
