Queenstown May 16 AP reports a squadron of American torpedo destroyers has safely crossed the Atlantic and is patrolling war seas. They endured two brushes with German submarines but details are scarce and the flotilla was greeted warmly. The British flotilla commander expressed surprise at their readiness after the voyage.
Washington May 16 Representative Charles H Brand was asked by Speaker Clark to preside over the house during debate on the major war revenue bill. A new and modest member, Brand initially hesitated but accepted at the speaker's urging. Once in the chair he conducted the proceedings with clear assurance and made no parliamentary blunders.
Fogelman delivers one of the greatest lectures ever heard in Athens, drawing a large audience. The talk featured engaging insights and a commanding presence that captivated listeners.
The current Redpath chautauqua fills the big tent each afternoon and night with growing enthusiasm. Miss Katherine Stylei leads the children's hour at 5 and rehearsals for Mother Goose continue. J Shackelford received a governor’s wire announcing the parole of William Burch of Athens, serving a ten year manslaughter term for the July 1916 shooting of his brother John Burch near Jackson Street. The parole was signed at 8 51 p m and news reached Athens at 8 59 p m. John urged mercy, saying his brother was not responsible at the time.
New York on May 16 reports Frederick C. Penfield former United States Ambassador to Austria has arrived aboard a French steamer en route to Washington. His wife accompanies him.
Birmingham reports that President Baugh of the Southern Baseball Association left for Mobile after news Mobile forfeited its franchise. A directors meeting is called and at least four will convene, with expectations the league will operate the club locally. The Virginia League also disbanded due to war conditions in Norfolk.
Arnold and Abney advertise fresh fish sale Friday with price at 15 cents a pound and invite customers to place orders today.
Local cotton factors buyers and Chamber of Commerce members met with Atlantic Compress officials in Athens to press for a sprinkler system. They argued Athens rates, about 400 per thousand, are far higher than Winder or Elberton due to lack of modern protection, urging immediate installation to lower premiums. Officials promised review but offered little optimism for relief.
Tickets for the Georgia Tech game go on sale at 10 this morning. Reserve seats in the grand stand cost 76 cents, with Section E available at Costa's after 10. General admission is 50 cents, sold at Costa's Thornton's and the M. & O. The matchups mark the continuation of a pivotal four game series between the teams, with previous wins by Georgia.
Havana report says the United States through Ambassador Gonzales warns that interfering with sugar production will be a hostile act. It states that if all rebels under arms do not surrender to the Cuban government, the U S may find it necessary to deal with them.

London May 16 Premier Lloyd George in a letter to John Redmond says the government will introduce a bill for immediate home rule to Ireland excluding Ulster counties. A council of Ireland to pass legislation, with power to extend or exclude, to gain majority support. If not extended in five years, Parliament may exclude. Redmond urged to reply by Monday. Irish unionists met to discuss. national alate to discuss Thursday. Alternative is Welsh self government scheme.

In a five hour debate the senate assailed the Council of National Defense and the shipping board for overstepping authority and interference with private industry. President Wilson was blamed for lack of cooperation with Congress, while advisory boards faced severe condemnation. The session adopted an amendment limiting the councils powers amid war-time measures.
