Athens officials and local leaders met with Major General Leopard Wood and officers to present claims for a concentration and training camp. A visiting board will survey sites in the southeastern department, including Athens on Sunday May 20, focusing on water, health, elevation, and transport access to select the best location.
In Peabody Hall Pres W B Hunt Cornelia of the Georgia Fruit Exchange addressed the young men on marketing. He analyzed marketing grading packing records of shipment and distribution and gave a history of the state exchange. He described its work and operation as a stock company handling crops from producer to consumer. The exchange expanded Georgia fruit sales from 12 cities to 500 and saved thousands in prices. It distributed shipments to avoid market glut and in one year collected $80000 from railroads for failure to provide cars, improving efficiency and shaping today’s fruit business.

Joseph Hodges Choate, former U S ambassador to Great Britain, died at his New York home after a long career as a leading lawyer. A Harvard graduate of 1852, he joined Everts Southmayd and Choate in 1856 and rose to prominence in the New York Bar. He was described as a distinguished practitioner, an accomplished speaker, and a notable octogenarian linked to an old New England family.
Ellie Mathews, a young white man, was convicted of attempted criminal assault on a white woman in this city. He withdrew his motion for a new trial and is set to immediately begin his fifteen year sentence.
Athens Redpath Chautauqua opens with a 3:30 afternoon session and 8:30 night program at Childs Street School lot. Featuring Bohemian Orchestra, Children's Hour, lectures by Dr. Martin D. Hardin, moving pictures, and season-ticket sales. Tickets 2.50 adults, 1.25 children, 1.25 students. sale at Chamber of Commerce and local stores.
Charles Wier, a colored man driving a Ford for Claud Lock, was fined 100 dollars or 100 days in the stockade after hitting and injuring the eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Bell. Police vow stricter auto law enforcement near schools on Prince Avenue amid heavy traffic. Local ads promote fresh trout, cabbage, onions, potatoes, eggs, bread, and farm products from Arnold Abney and King Hodgon Co.
On May 30 the Elijah Clarke Chapter D A R will publish a special Banner edition filled with articles stories and up to date ads. Local merchants are soliciting ads and pledging support to fund scholarships at the Normal School and to host the annual state conference in Athens. The effort aims to promote Athens while aiding the chapter’s philanthropic and educational work.
Petrograd May 13 Kerensky, addressing delegates from the front, warned Russia cannot be saved under current conditions. He said the people crave freedom but need discipline and urged enduring war, calling for a new spirit in the army and a firmer resolve to seek peace through defense. Meanwhile in Washington apprehension grew over Petrograd disturbances and toppled military leaders, with ministers resigning amid friction with officials and German intrigue.
A mass meeting of Barberville school patrons is planned for 8 30 pm with music by a quartet, remarks from Pres Pound of the State Normal School and Chancellor Barrow of the University, plus County Board Chair W M Colle and Capt Dozier presiding.
