A religious service led by Dr. Torrey at the union tent follows a rain-delayed morning and an evening program with songs and a sermon. The speaker cites Saul’s conversion and asks the audience, Why tarriest thou, urging immediate faith over worldly delay.
Augusta judge known as the father of good roads in Georgia has agreed to speak to the Athens chamber of commerce on the third Tuesday evening in July. R F Maddox will address the group on June 8 and another strong speaker is scheduled for the meeting on June 20 this month.
The newly formed bond commission met and elected Col. C. M. Snelling as president. City auditor G. Seth Wanessee will oversee accounts and secant duties. The committee includes Snelling, Nickerson, and T. S. Mell. A resolutions panel was named for Captain James White’s death.
A home burglary left Mr. Emory S. Cardell, a Bryant shops barber, $11 poorer as one dollar and two five dollar bills were taken from his trouser pockets without waking him. Receipts were scattered along the street. The incident mirrors local crime in progress.
The first Athens Georgia Tech game is set for tomorrow at 3 30 p.m. with 3000 spectators expected. Hitch cock and Senter are expected to duel on the mound after last Saturday s tie while Corley faces Bryant in a key clash. Georgia and Tech enter the series without a prior win or defeat against each other and crowds will include Tech students and a senior parade. General admission 50 cents, grand stand 25 cents extra, all seats reserved.
In Clarke Superior Court Panels 3 and 4 are excused until Monday May 17 at 9 o clock. The State v W H Shelton will not be tried May 13 as an affidavit on motion to continue has been presented by counsel. Court ordered by Judge Charles H Brand. Clerk E J Crawford.
A square deal sale lists Turnips 15¢ peck and 5c bunches, squash 7½c lb, Georgia beans 12c quart, Irish potatoes 8c quart, tomatoes 40c a dozen, strawberries 12%4c, lemons 18¢ a dozen, eggs 18¢ a dozen, ducks 10¢ each, turkeys 16 44¢ lb, broilers 30c each, hens 45c, Florida oranges 25¢ a dozen, Jersey butter 30c lb and cooking butter 25¢ lb. Last night the White City cotton mill was struck by lightning causing a transformer fire. Firefighters from box No 17 at the corner of Oconee and William streets were dispatched soon after 11 PM. The rainstorm and electrical surge limited damage to the plant.
Local ad lists irish potatoes at 3 quarts for 25 cents, fresh string beans 10 cents per unit, yellow squash 8 cents per pound, fries 87 percent, broilers three for $1.00, and turnip salad per peck for 15 cents. Athens Provision Co. promotes value specials for shoppers.
Houston May 12 Dr Lansing Burrows Americus Ga was unanimously re elected president of the Southern Baptist convention opening its sessions in Houston. The opening session featured reports against consolidating boards and a move to withdraw Baptist young people from World Wide Baraca and Philathea classes. The Foreign Mission Board reported progress with 300 missionaries and 30 000 members abroad and urged expanded work in China Brazil Mexico and other regions.
The United States will send a note to Germany demanding a guarantee against further submarine attacks on merchant ships with non-combatants aboard and full reparations for the Lusitania sinking and other violations. The note, revised by the president, asserts neutral rights and warns of further action if Germany fails to comply. A separate London report notes anti-German hostility in England and fears of riots with police mobilized.
Athens city finances show cash on hand and in banks almost equal to total obligations. Net figures reveal $1,329.12 in excess deposits over debts, with $3387.72 on hand and $247.73 collected yesterday. Mayor W. F. Dorsey leads a careful, wise, and successful administration, aided by Councilman John F. Tibbets, finance committee chair.
