Dr. Glover, a Franklin County physician charged with wife poisoning, has escaped from Carnesville jail with a colored man named Bunk Reidy using a skeleton key. A $100 reward for Glover and $50 for Reidy is posted as officers hunt broad daylight fugitives.
Advertisement claims Hood's Sarsaparilla sharpens appetite and tones digestion while curing sick headache.
A Jackson Herald editorial notes Augusta and Chattanooga rail plans revive interest in a through line from Chicago to Charleston or Port Royal. A recent Atlanta conference included Alfred Sulley Simon Borg & Co Lehman Bross Keyser & Co and others from New York London and Georgia with rail buyers urging route data on topography minerals and agriculture.
Dr H Munk of Nevada Iowa says he has practiced medicine fifteen years and regards Huckleberry Cordial as superior among medicines he has seen for towels and relief.
The Athens board of education elected Professor G. G. Bond as superintendent to replace Professor E. C. Branson who resigned to pursue opportunities out west. Mr George T Hodgson leaves Hodgson Brothers to start George T Hodgson broker and insurance agent on Thomas street. He is described as a hustling, progressive Athens businessman with strong relations and methods in the brokerage field. The new office is expected to attract local merchants.

They authorized building the Trail Creek bridge at 1051 with a foot and wagon design, advanced sewer work, and adjustments to street and school plans, while postponing parts of the sewerage ordinance and considering a county handbook project.

Bill Pledger, now jailed, has confessed to burglary at the home of Belen Palmer across the river. A watch, several dollars, and a watch chain were stolen. Police nabbed him last night after a notable effort and recovered part of the stolen items. Pledger broke down upon arrest and will remain jailed.

Police received a message from the Greenville sheriff stating Bill Johnson is jailed. He shot Johnson Webb on the G C N railroad less than two weeks ago and has been at large until his capture near Athene. He will face charges upon return to Athene.
Wa Timmons Postmaster notes Electric Bitters improved kidney and liver trouble symptoms better than other medicines. John Leslie farmer says it makes him feel like a new man. J W Gardner hardware merchant reports renewed strength and appetite after using the tonic priced at 50 cents per bottle.
The Lucy Cobb Institute young ladies entertained a large audience with French and mental arithmetic recitations. Miss Carrie Lou Varnedoe won the prize after faultless performance by six finalists, followed by a French prize speech from Prof. C. P. Willcox and a candy reward.
Last night a fire alarm sent the department racing to a Pink Morton residence but neighbors had put out the blaze. Damage was about 50 dollars.
Mrs Pope mother in law of Mr Bryant was reported to have a stroke of paralysis yesterday. Dr E D Newton travels to Valdosta and will attend World’s Fair in Atlanta Wednesday. Rev Dr Leftwich from Nashville arrives in Athens to assist revival meetings at First Methodist church with a noted gospel ministry. He will preach at 8 pm tonight.
An obscure herbal product called Dr Anefire Huckleberry Cordial is asserted as a universal remedy for various ore troubles. The claim lacks scientific support and appears promotional in nature.
Regular annual exams for positions in the city schools will be held Saturday May 9 for white schools and May 16 for colored schools. Subjects include Arithmetic US History Geography and Grammar. Superintendent K C Branton Washington Street School 9 a m.
Dr Graves has been identified as the man who mailed the liquor that caused Mrs Barnaby's death. A postal clerk who handled the package identified Graves and the stamped wrapper. The identity is to be forwarded for possible arrest actions after a review by relatives and authorities.

About 400 conversions and 2800 prayer requests marked the event, with all Protestant ministers uniting the city churches. Rev. At Martin's Ferry Ohio an unknown miscreant gave three boys under nine a loaded dynamite cartridge. The device exploded, blowing the youths about sixty feet. Charles Wilson was fatally injured with chest and abdomen torn. one Turney boy blinded. the other severely burned.
In Athens the Banner notes Pegwood author A J West of Turnerville died April 27 1891 after heart disease. West born Aug 12 1838 in Buncombe NC served as lieutenant colonel then colonel in the Civil War. Survived by wife and six children, his loss mourned by community.
