The Redpath Chautauqua opens this afternoon on the High School Grounds Athens. Prof G G Bond promotes season tickets at 250 and 3 00 after opening. Dr Horace Ellis heads the program with Wallace Bruce Amsbury and Miss Rita Rich among the key performers and speakers.
Judge Speer names receivers for the estate of James M. Smith. John R. White president of Athens National Bank, Charles H. Phinizy cotton factor, Rufus L. Moss manufacturer, and W. P. Carpenter of Atlanta named. White designated as chief counsel O A Park Macon appointed, Roland Ellis Macon and Carpenter Atlanta named associates. White as chairman to take charge of funds stocks and property of the estate.
The Banner promotes a large automobile show with wide national interest. Oldsmobile of the state is represented by H J Lamar with several cars and prep work by J H Griffith for the Cole8. James Music Co plans continuous demonstrations and a top quality program all day and night.
Fresh string beans fresh cauliflower fresh betts and home grown cabbage are advertised by Arnold and Abney with head lettuce priced at five and ten cents. The note mentions Mr. Bennett who grew up on a farm worked his way through college and later did post graduate work at two universities. His sermon lectures have been published as features in metropolitan newspapers and program announcements will appear in the morning Banner.
In El Paso May 1 Associated Press reports Secretary Baker instructed Generals Scott and Funston not to engage Obregon on immediate troop withdrawal. Washington says no change in policy to keep troops until brigandage ends. Obregon pressed for withdrawal while border talks proceed. Mexico has not formally demanded withdrawal.
In Washington and peston on May 1 Associated Press reports President Wilson spoke to several hundred women in khaki at an open air training encampment. He said the nation should avoid war but would rally to justice if it comes. The Navy League organized the camp to teach first aid and wartime techniques.
Dr Horace Ellis superintendent of the Redpath Chautauqua and his wife Mrs Ellis arrived in the city yesterday. They reside in Indianapolis and will direct Chautauqua activities all week on the High School grounds. Ellis has long served Vincennes University as president and is nominated by Republicans for state superintendent of public instruction.
In Lincoln Nebraska on May 1 William Jennings Bryan defeated a delegate contender to secure a nomination for the Democratic national convention. The outcome confirms Bryan will attend the convention.
A Norfolk and Western train No. 2 derailed seven miles south of Natural Bridge Roanoke on May 1. Three people were fatally hurt and many others seriously injured. The Associated Press reports a wreck with extensive damage and numerous passengers affected.
Berlin dispatches indicate a cautious improvement in German American relations as discussions at high command conclude. Ambassador Gerard has left for Berlin and a German reply to the U S note is anticipated shortly after censor clearance.
The Chamber of Commerce committee led by E. H. Dorsey must raise 500 to 800 dollars today to finish financing the summer school auditorium. They urge all citizens to report pledges to Dorsey, the chamber office, or the committee and for members to tidy up the donation lists before tomorrow’s meeting.
Mr. M. M. Bernstein leaves for Philadelphia to attend the annual rug and drapery sale. He will view the season’s selections in rugs carpets and draperies and may take a side trip to Athens before returning.
Royston Georgia May 1 a fire at 11 30 last night destroyed two story brick structures housing Royston Hardware Co and R J Bobo General Merchandise The blaze also affected nearby residences and stock a local merchant notes Fresh string beans new potatoes and vegetables were advertised while King Hodgson reported home raised strawberries and lettuce available at Arnold and Abney storehouses were cited as damaged in the blaze.
Dublin returned to calm as rebel leaders surrendered after days of upheaval. J M Pearse and James Connolly among those captured, with counts of prisoners expected to exceed a thousand in Dublin alone.
