Islands on the Road to Everywhere Cost the U S 25 Million
A National Geographic bulletin explains why the U S paid 25 million for the Virgin Islands. It notes St Thomas and St John are close to Porto Rico and Britain’s nearby holdings, with St Croix as the largest island. It cites harbor value in Charlotte Amalie and Coral Bay, strategic location, and the postwar administrative progress by the Navy including sanitation and education efforts.
