City officials led by the mayor and police chief announce a strong push to enforce vagrancy laws. Loafers will be investigated, and those without lawful means of support or who refuse work will receive city jobs with housing and food, under overseers, to curb crime in the streets.
The Georgia Pharmaceutical Association will meet in Classic City on May 27 and 28. About 150 members are expected among 200 attendees. The local pharmacists group, led by President H. R. Palmer, plans an entertaining program and warm reception for visitors from across the state.
Chief John S. McKie and officers D. W. Hin and R. A. Gaye returned from Abbeville District Washington to testify in a court matter. Abbeville citizens had earlier taken a trip to Atlanta and reportedly caused trouble on the train prompting police action.
This evening the Woman's Club presents a home talent production of Alice In Wonderland at the Colonial. The final dress rehearsal in the opera house yesterday afternoon went well with principals and choruses performing strongly. Noted society girls will take key roles and a large audience is expected with heavy advance sales. The show will also be repeated Thursday afternoon.
Growing evidence shows port rate policy becoming a major issue in Georgia politics this year. A two column editorial in Atlanta’s reform organ pushes for port rates, with mercantile interests lining up for a new fight. Election of two port rate supporters to the railroad commission could give the port rate faction a majority, shifting the battlefield to the commissions and possibly to the courts.
Yesterday afternoon about five thirty the balloon ascension at the Jom Jones Carnival Company grounds drew a large crowd. The big striped parachute and the rising balloon were visible downtown and from the ball park as spectators watched the soaring ascent.
A close Yankees win over Montreal drew an unusually sparse crowd. Key plays included Birdie Cree’s shoe-tip catch and Natress’s run, with ties and lead changes through the ninth before New York scored in the last. Hall and Cree starred for Montreal, while Walter and Gardner sparked the Yankees late rally. A third meeting at Stallings Field is set for this morning at 11 with no admission.
Monday night about 11 20 the Sea board car on the street railway line ran into a drag wagon tearing up both wagon and car slightly. The car, coming down Jackson street at a fair speed, struck the wagon after failing to see it in a dark spot between two arc lights. The car could not stop and damaged the front step and wagon, while the horses reared onto the sidewalk. Carnival worker Mr Cantara of the Johnny J Jones Car nival Company was scratched and bruised by the fall. The wagon and team belonged to Deadwyler Livery Stables and were transporting carnival equipment.
A warrant was issued for Ben Butler of Gainesville in a Sunday shooting incident near the Brick Yards along the Southern trackside. The report notes a mixed crowd and disorder, with Butler charged in the shooting and currently sought by authorities.
Thousands praise the Filipino Midgets at the Johnnie Jones Carnival. Martina de la Cruz and Juan entertain with acrobatics, waltzing, and quick gestures. The act costs ten cents and is noted as a standout attraction at the fair.
Mrs Shead aged mother of W H Shead sues for 10000 in Athens city court alleging switch engine negligence by S A L employees caused the fatal injuries to her son Friday morning. She says his earnings supported her and his death deprives her of livelihood. Attorneys Col Henry C Tuck and Col W M Smith of Athens represent the plaintiff.
Auction of 769 burned cotton bales from the March 18 Athena fire drew bids from firms led by Kahns Pickery of New Orleans. The winning bid of $29,425, above $30,000 value, came as insurers eyed the unusually high salvage price. other bids ranged down to $20,100 with firms from Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Savannah participating.
Revenue officers led by Deputy Collector Theodore Busch and Deputy Marshal Trammell raided a basement still at a private residence in Commerce area. They destroyed about 1000 gallons of beer in process and the still, finding no occupants at the home. Suspects are expected to be apprehended soon.
Gordon Institute visits Barnesville for a decisive afternoon clash with the Red and Black nine. Gordon fields a strong lineup led by Beggs at short and Cox at third with Smith pitching, aiming to lift the team after improving play this week. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
