Two Big F ire at Athens Compress and Lyndon Plant
Athens firefighters fought simultaneously two major blazes. Cotton at the Athens Compress burned after sparks from a Georgia railroad engine touched bale stock. Concurrently, a switch engine ignited lumber, triggering a fierce Lyndon Manufacturing yard and Standard Oil Co. warehouse fire. Firemen battled through heavy smoke to protect surrounding sheds, tanks, and rail facilities amid eastern winds.
