Report states American troops in Mexico joined forces with Carranza and began moving to encircle and capture Villa and his outlaw band at Onge Washington. Tension eases as authorities consider Carranza government may not balk.
News from San Antonio and Washington reports Pershing with a large American force crossing the Mexican border near Columbus while Carranza troops move to join and support. A second unit under Colonel Dodd advances west of Columbus. both columns aim to connect by week’s end as reports indicate coordinated action against Villa.
In Weakington on March 16 the administration bill to repeal the free sugar clause in the Underwood tariff was debated in the house and would take effect next May. Passage expected tomorrow. Opposed by Democrats Bailey Keating and Woodies who faced Republican taunts over advocating a protective tariff measure.
Washington March 1 The inter state commerce commission extended its livestock and meat transport inquiry to cover all railroads in the United States. The earlier order remained in effect as the investigation expands beyond the initial western scope and follows the western advance rate case where railroads sought higher charges.
Washington March 15 The Senate approved an amended postal savings banks law raising the individual deposit limit from 500 to 1000 with interest and an additional thousand without interest. The bill also allows postal savings deposits in state and national banks regardless of federal reserve affiliation.
News from Carrollton reports the death of William Gaston aged sixty seven at his home. He was father of Mrs. L. M. Carter of Athens. Funeral and burial occurred yesterday in Carrollton. Gaston was a prominent Carrollton resident and served on the board of stewards of the First Methodist church for forty four years.
Judge R B Russell former Georgia Court of Appeals chief justice stayed in the city on business. He declined comment on a possible run for Congress in the Ninth District against T M Bell but promised a statement soon. He praised Athens play On Trial after watching it in Atlanta. The notice also mentions local ads for King Hodgson Co produce and lists several Army officers and units.
The Wolff bureau reports Admiral Von Tirpitz has retired as German navy minister and Admiral Von Capelle, head of the admiralty administration, will take his place. Aunt Betsy Hayes a longtime Clarke County resident and centenarian passed away. She was more than a hundred years old, with burial attended by numerous people of her race and some white residents.
