Columbus New Mexico March 9 five troops of the thirteenth cavalry commanded by Majors Tompkins and Lindsley engaged Villa forces retreating from Columbus after a raid that killed at least sixteen Americans. Villa allegedly led 1500 attackers and burned parts of the town before dawn while American civilians fled. A captive woman Maude Hauke Wright said Villa’s men marched with little provisions and took her husband and child before being defeated by cavalry.
