The February report from City Marshal Brooks details total receipts of 2519.34 from all sources. Of this amount 2138.49 came from the general tax list and sewer and sidewalk taxes, while 333.85 were from special taxes. The report is deemed a solid showing for a dull month and will be presented to the mayor and council.
Judge George C. Thomas was seized by sudden illness at his law office and carried home by friends. A physician treated him and he showed great improvement by evening, with doctors noting kidney congestion as the cause and hopes for a rapid convalescence.
Clarke county commissioners held a semi monthly meeting in the county clerk’s office. They fielded petitions to establish a new road from W A Phillips land to Mandy Harden land and declared a public highway for a city front road near the State Normal school. Special commissioners were appointed to study feasibility and report at the next meeting. The opening day for farm erect bids was also set.
Mr D L Carter aged 65 died at his Williams and Oconee streets home yesterday morning from pneumonia. He leaves a wife Emma Carter and one grandchild Annie Emerick. Funeral at Second Baptist Church this afternoon at 2 with Confederate veterans as pallbearers, Rev Willie Saye and Rev A J Sears officiating. Interment at Oconee Cemetery. He was well known in the city for his noble traits.
Dr H D Massey aged 67 a longtime Union church member near Neese Georgia died yesterday morning from paralysis at his home He will be buried from Union church today at noon with Rev E L Hill officiating Survived by wife and children Mrs S C Massey Mrs J M Crawford Mrs H T Heard D H Massey W B Massey Miss Onelda Massey Mrs Z M Tolbert and Mrs C D Williams in Madison County He was regarded as a good man with many friends.
Mr Alfred T Conway formerly assistant cashier at the Georgia National Bank resigns and enters fire insurance and real estate, joining Lipscomb & Co to expand that firm. The Banner praises his drive and predicts strong growth with senior partner F A Lipscomb guiding the long standing insurance business.
Congratulations pour in for the arrival of a bright lit baby boy at the Whiteheads home this week. Parents Mr and Mrs EG Whitehead celebrate the birth with joy and pride.
Miss Marla Price of Farmington visits Miss Fannie Incas this week. Miss W D Carrington is dangerously ill at her home on Praski Street.

Before the Sherman mayor at city hall, Sherman Hawks, a white man, stands trial for violating local liquor sales ordinances. Nearly fifty witnesses were called as police issued thirty six summonses and more are expected. The city’s court has recently tried and convicted two similar cases this week.
City court convenes at 9 am for all cases in which Judge H West is disqualified. Judge W W Starke will preside in place of Judge West in those matters.
Yesterday morning the burial of Mrs Lella Chan Franklin, who died suddenly at her Kansas City home, took place at Oconee cemetery. Rev Dr Troutman led a brief service as friends gathered at the station and pallbearers included J H Dozier W C Davis Devpree Hunnicutt H C Erwin T L Mitchell and John T Anderson.
Athens gains another insurer as the Southern States Insurance Company seeks a charter. The company will have no capital stock and will base its home offices in Athens with branch offices to follow in Georgia and other states. Petitioners include H. S. West E. S. Rylee W. S. Callaway H. M. Rylee and H. J. Rowe of this city.
A brief theater blurb describes Brown and his disabled companion visiting a park where an imaginative urchin disrupts Brown's rest, leading to a clash that unsettles his wife. The note references "The Blind Man's Tact" and "Imp" as today's program at the Crystal Theater, Home of Good Pictures.
In the city court Chad Ellis and Jim Clark, both labeled colored, pleaded guilty to gambling. Ellis was fined 50 dollars or six months on the gang, Clark faced the same choice and received the same penalty. Marjory Bickers, repeatedly mentioned, is noted as improving.
