Chamber of Commerce backs Sunday freight trains during war
Athens Chamber of Commerce at its regular meeting passed a resolution urging suspension of the state prohibition on Sunday freight trains for war times. Gen. A. R. Lawton of Central of Georgia Railannah explains the proposed change, arguing that current law cripples Georgia railroads by reducing freight capacity by over 10 percent during wartime, threatening troop and goods mobilization and raising costs. The measure, to be introduced at the next General Assembly, would restore 4,526 loaded cars per day to service and prevent nationwide equipment shortages from worsening during the war.
