The Eighth District Georgia Masonic Convention will meet August 14 in the Masonia Temple Athens. Leaders will present lodge reports and deliver a Masonic address as part of the annual gathering for the good of the order.
About two hundred visitors expected for day sessions and an evening program hosted by Dorsey Furniture Company. Mount Vernon lodge will welcome the guests with officers listed from Athens and nearby towns. The convention opens Wednesday at 10 A M with welcome addresses by the mayor and Col Max Michael and responses to the welcome.
Master J F L Bond presides with a 2 80 p m barbecue dinner followed by an afternoon session 3 30 to 6 p m conferring M M degree by officers and 8 30 p m public address by R W G W H Ballard from Brunswick 10 30 p m lodge room social. Course of business begins with roll call of judges.
Hundreds attend the Stephens Georgia funeral for Ath ens resident Charles C. Birchmore who died after a fall from a seventh story Atlanta apartment. Elks and Masons send delegations. Chancellor Barrow and the Athens circle attend. Services feature sacred music and ritual burial rites.

Election to fill the unexpired term of the late A Richards will be held in Athens First Ward with two candidates, R T Wright and A G Dudley. Chas W Parr announces a special reduction on all wallpapers to clear space for a large arriving shipment. The offer promises the latest designs and cheerful estimates from skilled hangers. An additional note mentions a Colonial vaudeville performance today.
The Tippins Alexander prohibition bill, passed by the Georgia House, advances to the Senate. It prohibits alcoholic beverages above 12 1/2 percent and targets patent medicines, locker clubs, and licensing, with Governor Brown likely to decide after Senate action.
Mr J D Lester died yesterday near noon at his Foundry street home after weeks of illness. A 45 year old farmer and former city drag line operator, he also once served with the Athens fire department. He leaves a wife, his mother Mrs EB Lester, two brothers J A and B D Lester, three sisters Mrs J M Richards Mrs Charles Childers and Mrs Pink Bullock, all of Athens. Funeral today at 2 p m at Patterson Methodist Church, with Rev BE Hill and Rev S R England officiating. Pallbearers meet Miller's at 1 p m: W T Fields J A Nelms W A Harris Arthur Tuck J H Monahan Robert Davis.
A two reel feature called Called Back shown at the Majestic today promises stronger popular appeal than previous offerings. The film is an authorized dramatization of Hugh Conway’s novel. Also note an automobile contest standings update on the screen and local ad listings including Fox River Butter at 40c.
The regular monthly council meeting extended to hear appeal cases after eight then half hour recess. Frank Bush charged with keeping whisky on hand for sale was found not guilty after lengthy arguments. Other cases with the same witnesses were dismissed. The council scheduled an additional session this afternoon to dispose of all pending appeals.
